Twin Pines Medical Center Executive Summary
The Twin Pines Medical Center is a healthcare facility located in northern Louisiana that primarily serves poor and underserved populations. It offers various services, including administrative and outpatient offices, a pharmacy, a dental suite, a family medicine clinic, a women's health clinic, and a 34-bed hospital for inpatient services (Twin Pines Medical Center, n.d). However, the lack of medical specialists in the primary care clinic causes many patients to seek emergency care, which results in the hospital exceeding the revenue it actually generates. This situation is harmful to the organization. Collaborating with The Mayo Clinic could help TPMC properly treat patients, increase revenue, educate its own physicians and nurses on diabetic care, and reduce the number of patients who seek emergency care for preventable diabetic issues.
In my opinion, it would be beneficial to consider partnering with The Mayo Clinic, particularly for
their comprehensive diabetic education program and pediatric diabetic specialty care services (Diabetes - Care at Mayo Clinic - Mayo Clinic, 2023). The Mayo Clinic has an established reputation for providing top-tier healthcare services, including diabetes care. Their Diabetic Education Program is tailored to meet the unique needs of patients suffering from diabetes. The program offers a wide range of services, including group or individual education sessions, medical nutrition therapy, medication management, and more (Diabetes - Care at Mayo Clinic - Mayo Clinic, 2023).
Additionally, The Mayo Clinic has a specialized pediatric diabetes care unit that delivers comprehensive care to children with diabetes. The unit is staffed by experienced pediatric endocrinologists, nurses, and dietitians who work together to develop personalized care plans for each patient. By partnering with The Mayo Clinic, you will be able to offer your patients a fully integrated clinical network. This means that patients will have access to primary care services at TPMC, specialty care services at The Mayo Clinic, and all healthcare providers involved in the patient's care will remain informed of each other's actions. This will allow for better communication and coordination of care, resulting in improved health outcomes for your patients.
The goals for the affiliation are as follows: Reduce the overuse of TPMCs emergency department. Allow patients to receive specialty care with a trusted partner. Figure out how to get patients the treatment they need at a price they can afford.
TPMC has been experiencing a surge in the number of patients visiting the emergency department. As this has been causing a strain on the resources, TPMC needs to find ways to reduce the overuse of the emergency department for non-emergent or emergent diabetic issues that could’ve been
prevented. This involves raising awareness among patients about preventive diabetic care, encouraging them to visit their primary care physician for non-diabetic emergency issues, and exploring other preventive measures to minimize the need for emergency care altogether.
TPMC would form a valuable partnership with one of the most reputable healthcare institutions in the Nation, The Mayo Clinic. This collaboration enables patients to receive exceptional specialty care from a trusted and recognized partner in the healthcare industry. This strategic alliance is designed to provide patients with the best possible care and access to cutting-edge medical treatments and technologies.
The primary focus of TPMC, and The Mayo Clinic would be to ensure that patients receive the necessary medical treatment without facing any financial hurdles. The organizations are dedicated to
finding effective ways to make specialty care accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their income or social status. It's important to consider the possible tension that may arise when two organizations come together. This is called "culture shock," which is the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone when they are suddenly exposed to an unfamiliar culture and way of life (Culture Shock Stages: Everything You Need to Know, n.d.). This could affect the staff of both organizations since they work for organizations with different missions and statements. However, the biggest impact could be on patients who are used to receiving a certain type of care at TPMC and would now be seen at The Mayo Clinic without knowing how they would be treated. To reduce tension, it is important for staff to receive proper training and have the necessary tools to provide the best patient care. Staff who care for these patients, whether they are TPMC staff or The Mayo Clinic staff, are likely to feel intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from within, when you are intrinsically motivated, you engage in an activity because you enjoy it and get personal satisfaction from doing it, while extrinsic motivation arises from external factors (Barr, 2022).
