Nick’s NIAAA Alcohol screening and Brief Intervention for Youth age 9-18
Southern New Hampshire University
After finishing the CAGE -AID assessment I moved on the next assessment I choose National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Alcohol screening and Brief Intervention for Youth age 9-18. This screening asks two questions one about the individuals alcohol use and then one about individuals friends alcohol use these questions were different depending on age group. For Nick the since he was in high school category (14-18). The questions were “in the past year on how many days in the past year have you had more then a few sips of beer wine or any drink containing alcohol” his response was “everyday “. The second question “If your friends drink how many drinks do, they usually have on an occasion? Nick responds “multiple a couple or shots or sometimes a six pack of beer.”
Next I assessed risk because Nick stated that he drinks every day he is the highest risk category is drinking at his age 17 of is 24- 52+ days at this point I asked what’s most you had at time and he said at least six pack of beer . At that point next steps are to conduct a brief Motivational interviewing “Motivational interviewing is a directive, patient-centered style of counseling that helps patients explore their natural ambivalence about changing. Its friendly, collaborative “spirit” is considered more important than any particular set of techniques. (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) 2011) I took a moment to express acknowledge Nick ability to notice that his life wasn’t going the way he wanted and that he needed help and he took
action so now we can work together to him the help needs so he can get where he wants to be. The next step was set up a goal for the follow up we spoke about 4 – week abstinence challenge which nick was hesitant to but he was willing to try cut down from a 6 pack of beer to just 3 beers or 3 shots a day .so that was our goal for the follow up last step is to would to see how he did with follow up was he successful and what if any challenges came up .
