Describe the study that you selected, including the study design and research methodology used (e.g., the data-collection method). The researchers in this study conducted a cross-sectional study design utilizing secondary data. This study used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from four consecutive 2-year cycles (1999-2000, 2001-2002, 2003-2004, and 2005-2006) to analyze physical activity and insulin resistance in adults. Data was collected on individuals aged 20-84 and who had participated in 48 physical activities, fasting blood glucose and insulin levels, race, sex, age, year of assessment, body mass index, smoking status, and waist circumference. There were a total 6500 participants included in the study. Two methods were used to categorize participants physical activity levels based on calculated Metabolic equivalents (MET-minutes). The first method used was the “relative method” and the second method was “guideline-based method”. The first method was based on the NHANES sample and the second method was based on the 2018 US Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. If the author(s) had used primary data in the study rather than secondary data, how do you think this would have changed the study design, if at all? Justify your position. If the researcher in this particular study would have used primary data instead of secondary data, the biggest obvious change would be the cost. The use of the secondary data was no cost to the researcher. Additionally, it may be difficult in attaining a sample size that was viable, which may result in the data being collected to not necessarily fit the needs of the study or the ability to provide enough or incomplete information as well. Although, using primary data allows the researcher with more control, I believe the choice of using secondary data was the optimal one in this particular study. Evaluate the selected research methods and secondary data sources that were used in the study. Do you believe they were the most appropriate? Why or why not? If not, provide recommendations for improvement. Justify your recommendations.  In my opinion, I believe the researchers made a good decision with the secondary data chosen in the study. Reason being is that they were able to have a sufficient sample size to explain the significant differences in measured insulin resistance in adults. Secondly, two methods were measure physical activity adequately. The use of NHANES data source allowed researchers to show there were significant differences in measured insulin resistance amongst US adults. Reference Fowler, J. R., Tucker, L. A., Bailey, B. Thank you for sharing a detailed description of your article selection. You stated that the use of secondary data was a sufficient choice because that data source asked the specific questions related to research topic, however primary data collection may be just as beneficial. This only because it would allow the researcher to have more control over the data, ensuring it is valid and reliable (Ramallal et al., 2018). Primary data allows the researcher the tools to target an issue and zero in on the research question (Ramallal et al., 2018). Thanks again for response! Chantal Reference Ramallal, G. You mentioned that there maybe some concern with the use of secondary data due to the fact that “there may be problems when this questionnaire is used for secondary data because there are differences in the degree of reporting between people's methods for documenting events on paper and having them transcribed”. That statement alone opens the door to a variety of biases that can potentially occur in the data collection process. Here are a few that may happen: Recall Bias : This occurs when participants do not remember past events or experiences accurately. This can lead to inaccurate data.
