Happy Doc Student: Steps 4 to 6
In step four "Find Your Tribe", I resonated with the quote "You may have already talked
candidly with your loved ones about the decision to pursue your degree, and maybe they are
100% on board, but if not, don't lose heart (Fredrick,2022)". I can resonate with this specific
quote because not everyone is going to agree and be accepting of your dreams in life, but you
have to know how to push forward in life. When you do something it has to be based on your
own goals and visions rather than another person's perspectives or views of how things should
be. I have taken on this same personification when it comes to me completing my PHD, I am
aware of my own goals in life therefore, no one else's opinion matters.
According to the text in this chapter, there are some family members that can potentially
serve as your emotional support person. This family member is willing to help out and offer
oodles of practical help in any way they know how such as, with cleaning, shopping, and etc.
The person that has helped me in this manner would be my husband because on many days I am
so dedicated to my work that I have to get done therefore, he has to literally take up the slack. He
helps me by cooking, cleaning, and sometimes taking me to the grocery store when I am unable
to do so myself. This has been a big help to me because it helps to lower my work load.
Another quote that I have taken on since joining this program would be in step 5 "Master
Your Schedule", Yes, the more time you dedicate to your program the better however, you must
go beyond simply finding more clock hours you need to master your schedule in a way that beats
procrastination and increases your personal energy so you can complete the challenging tasks at
hand (Fredrick,2022)". As a PHD student this is something I know all too well because I struggle
with procrastination. I have always procrastinated and did things at my own speed which is not a
good trait especially as a teacher. As an educator it is always good to be on time and learn how to

prioritize things because this is something that must be demonstrated to all students, not just
some. I am in hopes to get better with this skill before the completion of my program here at
Arizona Global University.
As mentioned in this chapter, it is imperative to take on strategies which allow one to
master their schedule. Increasing the skills to help master your schedule will help you to have
time to dedicate specifically to time to study. Also, Mark Woods the coauthor of "Attack Your
Day! Before It Attacks You", mentioned that each day we wake up we are given three gifts
which are time, choice, and personal energy. This author was trying to tell us that everyone
wakes up with the same opportunity when it comes to managing time each day.
In step six "Work Smart", this chapter offered several pro tips that resonated with me well.
The first tip was in support of personal self care, and the author mentioned that water and sleep
can be a huge help when it comes to personal self-care. It is imperative to always practice
self-care because this is what helps us to be able to have the energy we need to be able to get our
homework and assignments completed, especially as a college student. Getting the proper rest
and consuming the right amount of water helps me to simply focus better.
One resource that I will be taking on in the future is the article “The Relationship Between
Achievement Motivation and College Student’s General Self-efficacy: A Moderate Mediation
Model”. This article will be quite useful to me because it helps students to achieve mental health
when it comes to their education which is vital, because it is easy to stress out when you are
overloaded or overwhelmed with homework. Some individuals don't take stress very well and
this article gives specific strategies that can be done to get over these kinds of hurdles and
milestones. Mental wellness is an important factor in being successful in this doctoral program.
To persist in this journey that I am on with earning my PHD in education, I need continued moral
