ETHICAL WRITING IN HEALTHCARE Carlie Fida Purdue University Global CM107M4 Professor Lisa Teitler 11/28/2023
Ethical writing is an important part of working in the medical profession. When using ethical writing to construct a report, research will be the primary source of information. It is always important to make sure that the information taken from the research is accurate, credible, and relevant when creating a report. When using information from a reliable source it should not be plagiarized as it is unethical. Writing ethically in the medical profession is crucial as treatments and new medical developments rely on research and studies. When looking for reliable and relevant research information it is important to look for articles that are accurate, unbiased, credible, and relevant. One example would be Peer reviewed articles. These articles are revised by experts in that area of study. Another example would be using articles that are written and published by experts in the specific field such as the CDC or a physician conducting a study. They are a vital source for medical guidance so the information they give out is reliable. When obtaining information from an expert in the field it is always reliable and accurate information. For example, the CDC states that the covid vaccines are safe and effective (CDC, 2023). They have been monitoring the safety and efficacy of the vaccine since it was approved for emergency use in 2020 (CDC, 2023). This statement is logical, detailed, and shows consistent results supporting its accuracy. It is relevant as it is only talking about the vaccine and the safety surrounding it. The source was recently updated in 2023 so it is up to date and relevant. It is credible as it comes directly from a federal agency that specializes in disease control and prevention. Therefore, this is a reliable source to use in supporting research. Another example, Aboud and Hussein conducted a study about the safety of the covid vaccine in patients with rheumatic diseases (Aboud and Hussein, 2023). During this study 126 patients were given covid vaccines and 200 a placebo vaccine (Aboud and Hussein, 2023).
44.4% of the patients who received the covid vaccine complained of body aches and 77% of patients who received a placebo complained of injection site pain (Aboud and Hussein, 2023). This information is factual, very detailed, and unbiased so therefore it is credible and accurate. This is a peer reviewed article, so it is edited and revised by experts. It was also written by 2 rheumatologists who are experts in the field. The authors did not go off topic and strictly spoke about the study and its results. The article was recently published in 2023 so it is relevant. This source would be a proper representation of what is acceptable supporting research. When inputting the information into a report it is pivotal not to plagiarize. Plagiarism is copying another’s work and taking credit for it. To do so is unethical and disreputable. Plagiarism can be avoided by always keeping track of sources through citing them in APA format on a reference list and citing those references using direct quotes, i.e. (Last name, year). Paraphrasing is another form of in-text citation. Properly citing after paraphrasing a source is an additional way to prevent plagiarism. Paraphrasing is restating the information in one’s own words and always using an in-text citation afterwards to give the author credit for the idea. Having a report written in APA format makes it easier for people to understand. This format gives the opportunity to present ideas in a clear and organized manner. APA format includes a 12-point font, Times New Roman theme, Double spaced lines, one-inch margins on each side of the paper, with each paragraph indented. A title page is a requirement which includes a title in bold capitalized letters, the author’s name, affiliation, and date. Having this information present gives identification for where the report originates. When writing the information, in-text citations and a reference list are included. Incorporating APA format will present an organized and easy to understand report, avoiding any plagiarism.
