Read and Review Essential IV: Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology.
1.
Post one paragraph addressing the following: Why are knowledge and skills in information management and patient care technology critical in the delivery of quality patient care?
2.
Write a second paragraph describing how you met Essential IV during the BSN program. Provide specific examples.
To deliver high-quality patient care, it is important to have a strong foundation with information management and patient care technology because nurses can use technology to support patient care interventions, communicate effectively, promote patient safety, work efficiently, use evidence-based practice, and make informed decisions (Kudyba, 2016). Nurses manage information, data, lab results, and abnormal findings when caring for their patients and must use this information to make clinical decisions. Furthermore, patient care technology consists of monitors, recording devices, and data gathering equipment. Examples of this includes vital signs machine, a monitor to record the patient’s heart rhythm, a glucometer to test for a patient’s sugar,
and automated IV pumps to control dosages of medications. It is important for nurses to be skilled and competent in using patient care technologies because it will improve healthcare efficiency, quality, safety, and cost (Kudyba, 2016). During the BSN program, I have met the requirement of Essential IV: Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology. I have met the application of patient care technology in the clinical setting by becoming familiar with the medical equipment at my clinical
rotations. For example, in my introduction to medical-surgical rotation, I was introduced to a variety of new equipment, such as the IV pump, pyxis, the beds of the patients, wearable devices,
and portable monitors. During this time, I was able to learn how each equipment functioned, how
to manipulate it correctly, and why it is important during the hospitalization of the patients. I used patient care technology to implement patient interventions. For example, in order to assess a
patient’s vital signs every four hours, I used a portable vital signs machine. Additionally, to continuously monitor a patient’s cardiac rhythm, I observed the monitor at the patient’s bedside or at the nurse’s station to assess for any abnormalities. Furthermore, I was able to manage patient information and data through mostly through electronic health records. In the patient’s EHR, I was able to conveniently find the patient’s lab values, vital signs, intake/output, and radiology reports. With this access, I was able to use my judgment to plan my next steps or interventions. For example, if I noticed a patient had an abnormal electrolyte value, I would assess the patient and notify the physician of the abnormal finding. Kudyba, S. (2016).
