2-2 Activity: Topic Introduction
There are several social or global issues related to the issues of wellness, one of which is the opioid crisis. Originating in North America and spreading globally, the opioid crisis refers to the significant increase in opioid misuse, addiction, and overdose deaths. The over-prescription and availability of prescription painkillers, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, primarily drive it (
CDC
, 2023).
In the description of recovery from substance use disorder, it is crucial to mention the following main points (SAMHSA, n.d.):
•
Definition and prevalence:
Explaining what substance use disorder is and highlighting its prevalence worldwide.
•
Biological factors:
Discuss the biological aspects of addiction, including how drugs affect the
brain's reward system and lead to physical dependence. At the same time, the role of withdrawal symptoms and cravings in recovery.
•
Psychological factors:
Exploring the psychological aspects of addiction and recovery, such as
the link between mental health disorders and substance use, and emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying emotional issues and developing coping mechanisms.
•
Treatment options:
Describing various evidence-based treatment approaches, such as medication-assisted therapy, counseling, and support groups, and highlighting the importance of individualized treatment plans tailored to each person's needs and circumstances.
•
Support systems
: Discuss the significance of social support networks, including family, friends, and community organizations, in the recovery process. Also, mention the role of peer support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
2-2 ACTIVITY
1
•
Relapse prevention:
Explaining the importance of ongoing care and relapse prevention strategies. Mention the need for continued support, regular check-ups, and access to aftercare services to maintain long-term recovery.
Additional details to ensure a thorough description might include:
1.
The impact of substance use disorder on different aspects of life, such as relationships, employment, and overall well-being
2.
The stigma surrounding addiction and efforts to reduce discrimination and promote understanding
3.
The role of early intervention and prevention programs in reducing the prevalence of substance use disorder
4.
The cost and economic burden associated with substance abuse and addiction treatment
5.
The need for policy changes and increased funding for addiction treatment and recovery support services
One significant population in the recovery from substance use disorder is the LGBTQ+ community. This population faces unique challenges and experiences that can impact their recovery process (
National Institute on Drug Abuse
, 2023).
•
Demographics:
The LGBTQ+ community is diverse and includes individuals who identify as
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning. They come from various age groups and backgrounds.
•
Cultural Practices:
The LGBTQ+ community has its cultural practices and identities, which can influence their experiences with substance use and recovery. Some individuals may face discrimination, rejection, or isolation due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, making
them more vulnerable to substance use as a coping mechanism.
•
Social Identity:
LGBTQ+ individuals often find support and belonging within their community. However, societal stigma, discrimination, and lack of acceptance can contribute 2-2 ACTIVITY

to feelings of shame, low self-esteem, and mental health issues. These factors can complicate their recovery journey and the support they need.
•
Key Challenges:
LGBTQ+ individuals may face specific challenges in accessing appropriate and inclusive substance use disorder treatment and recovery services. For instance, healthcare providers may not be knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ health issues, leading to inadequate or inappropriate care. Additionally, fear of judgment or discrimination might prevent individuals from seeking help or being open about their struggles.
It is crucial to address these challenges by providing LGBTQ+-affirming treatment and recovery programs. Creating safe and inclusive spaces, educating healthcare providers about LGBTQ+ issues, and fostering acceptance and understanding within society are crucial steps towards supporting this population's recovery journey.
Several examples illustrate how larger global society has impacted the issue of substance use and
recovery within the LGBTQ+ community:
•
Stigma and discrimination:
LGBTQ+ individuals often face societal stigma and discrimination, which can lead to increased stress, mental health issues, and isolation. Contributing to substance use as a coping mechanism. Society's negative perceptions and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people can create barriers to seeking help and support (Kaliszewski, 2019).
•
Legal and policy barriers:
In some countries, laws and policies may discriminate against or criminalize LGBTQ+ individuals. These laws can hinder access to healthcare, including substance use disorder treatment and recovery services. They can also perpetuate stigma and reinforce societal biases (Kaliszewski, 2019).
•
Lack of inclusive healthcare:
Many healthcare providers may lack knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ+ health issues, leading to inadequate or inappropriate care and preventing LGBTQ+ individuals from seeking help or receiving appropriate treatment (Kaliszewski, 2019).
