1. Please specifically discuss how, if admitted to our program, your admission would contribute to the diversity of the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science community. (150 words) Growing up in Malaysia, I faced the harsh realities of racism and colorism. I vividly remember being excluded from the school soccer team due to ethnic quotas and enduring discrimination based on my skin tone. To fit in, I resorted to using skin whitening products, subjecting my skin to harmful chemicals. These experiences ingrained in me a deep understanding of the injustices and biases that persist in society. Despite my achievements as a student and athlete, I encountered intangible barriers solely because of my skin color. Drawing from these experiences, I am resolute in amplifying the voices of underrepresented individuals and advocating for greater diversity in leadership and resources. I will advocate for my peers, ensuring their voices are heard and respected. By fostering a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere, I hope to contribute to a healthy and supportive learning environment for everyone by embracing their differences, talents, and unique qualities. 2. Briefly share your plans for the upcoming academic year? Do you plan to work, conduct research, volunteer in a health care setting, participate in community service, attend school, travel, participate in leisure activities or other activities. (150 words) During this application season, I will continue working as an orthopedic scribe. I am eager to delve further into the dynamic clinical setting and gain invaluable experiences. Simultaneously, I am actively pursuing the role of a scribe manager, aiming to assume a leadership position where I can assist and mentor new scribes while fostering closer collaboration with physicians and surgeons at the clinic. Additionally, I will begin volunteering at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, where my specific duties are yet to be determined. I look forward to returning to volunteering at another hospital, interacting with patients and making a positive impact. I hope to embrace these commitments and make the most of this application season.
3. Have you ever had a major setback? What was the cause and how did you overcome it? To overcome the setback of homelessness caused by the sudden campus evacuation during the Covid-19 outbreak, I took proactive steps and sought support. I reached out to local organizations, shelters, and my network of friends for temporary accommodations. Fortunately, I received assistance from caring friends and their families, who provided me with shelter and kindness. Focused on finding solutions and regaining control, I utilized campus and counseling services to access helpful resources and guidance. I researched affordable rental options and explored opportunities for stable income. Prioritizing self- care and personal development, I maintained a positive mindset and sought moments of respite. Through resilience, support, planning, and self-care, I overcame this setback and gained valuable insights into the power of human kindness. This setback highlighted the importance of empathy and compassion, serving as a driving force behind my desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. 4. What areas of your life needs the most improvement, and what plans have you made to improve it? Balancing work or projects with social responsibilities is an area of my life that requires improvement. I have noticed a pattern in which I become overzealous with certain tasks, especially when working on something I am passionate about. While dedication and focus are essential, I often find myself neglecting my social responsibilities in the process. I have developed a plan to improve this aspect of my life to address this issue. Primarily, I am practicing self-awareness and recognizing the signs of becoming too immersed in a project. By being mindful of my tendencies to overfocus, I can catch myself before it becomes detrimental to my social life. Additionally, by seeking support from friends and loved ones, I aim to maintain a well-rounded life and prevent neglecting my social responsibilities. By implementing these strategies, I am confident in achieving a healthier balance, fostering meaningful relationships, and enhancing my overall well- being.
