The impact on climate change can have a major effect on disasters which can lead to complications of the disaster and additional disasters. An impact that has affected my community
is extreme heat and heat waves. Not only do heat waves have an effect on the environment but it also affects the people causing an increased risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and heat related death (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2022). Additionally, heat waves can lead to drought and wildfires causing more catastrophic effects to include loss of crops, homes, and lives (SAMHSA, 2023). Furthermore, the smoke from wildfires can have negative effects on
a person’s respiratory system especially those with chronic conditions and the chemicals being released by burning objects can negatively affect a person’s health as well (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2022). While there is no way of truly preventing a disaster from occurring, there are steps that can be taken to help prepare the community for when it arrives. Some of these advisable steps would be to develop evacuation plans, have an early warning system, and identify resources available that could be utilized for support during and after the disaster (SAMHSA, 2023). One policy to be implemented to mitigate risk for nurses is proper education and training on disaster preparedness, particularly to the disasters their communities are most at risk of (Harris, 2018). With adequate education the proper resources can be utilized to decrease the risk of contamination or exposure to hazardous substances and ensure the safety of the nurse. Along with that it is vital to have adequate amount of resources available to handle the effects of the disaster and to ensure that, policy can be implemented to have dedicated supply storages for necessary resources to be used during a disaster.
