Week 6 Discussion
I have designed a lesson plan based on the Virginia Standards of Learning History 1.5a. This standard requires students to utilize their social science and history skills to describe the significant contributions made by diverse people of Virginia. They should also be able to narrate the stories of changemakers in Virginia's history and their contributions to our Commonwealth. The standard includes a description of Indigenous peoples such as Chief Powhatan and Pocahontas. Additionally, students will learn about these two important characters and gain an understanding of their cultures of the past, including tools, clothing, homes, and ways of making a living.
To commence the lesson, I will read "The True Story of Pocahontas" by Lucille Recht Penner, which I believe will capture the students' attention. I will use a "KWL" chart to engage the students in the learning process, and I will answer any questions that arise. I will also show another PowerPoint presentation, and in the end, the students will be able to create a book that states three important facts about Chief Powhatan and Pocahontas where they can be creative and express their ideas.
