What types of people helped isolated civilizations trade with one another in ancient times (1:00- 1:30)? answer: Nomadic Tribes helped civilizations trade with each other. 4. According to this video, what goods were traded between Rome and China? answer: They traded silk and roman glassware. 5. Which religions, ideas, and technologies were spread through the Silk Roads? answer: Islam, and Buddhism were spread, along with gunpowder and compasses. Section II: The Middle East 1. Which trade networks connected to the Middle East? answer: The silk roads, trans – Saharan trade routes, the Mediterranean sea complex, and the Indian Ocean Complex. 2. Identify four cities that the people living in Aden could have traded with. answer: Mombasa, Mogadiscik, Calicut, Cambia ( some of the names were cut off ) 3. How might living at the intersection of several trade networks have affected the lives of people in the Middle East during the post-classical era? answer: The people that lived there would have more goods imported from other places. Section III: The Indian Ocean Complex (or Network) 1. Based on the map where is the Indian Ocean Complex located? answer: In between the silk roads and Africa, and travels through all the trade routes. 2. How is this trade network connected to other trade networks?
answer: It travels through Africa to the trans – Saharan trade routes and touches the Mediterranean Sea Complex at the top, and it also goes through the middle east to the silk roads and back around. 3. What were three goods that could have travelled in the Indian Ocean complex? answer: Cotton, timber, and ivory. 4. What goods could have travelled on the Silk Road to get to the Indian Ocean? answer: Silk, porcelain, and tea. Section IV: How did trade routes in the Middle East affect the civilizations connected by them? 1. What goods were traded between the Middle East and other regions during the Classical Era? answer: Incense, copper, perfumes. 2. What goods originated on the Arabian peninsula? answer: Textiles, spices, and ivory. 3. Identify three cities on the Arabian peninsula that you think would have the most trade. Why did you choose those three cities? answer: Baghdad, Mecca, and Aden. This is because they have the most routes connects to them. 4. What challenges did traveling in the Incense Trade Route in the desert pose to traders? How did they overcome those challenges? (video) answer: Wars, thieves, and natural disasters posed a threat. Wells and a place to stop were provided for these traders. 5. Why was Palmyra a prosperous city? (video) answer: Palmyra was located at the intersection of the silk road and incense route. 6. How do archaeologists know that Palmyra was a prosperous city? Cite three pieces of evidence. (video) answer: It had water supplies which traders paid taxes in order to use. The colonnades and monumental arches were also evidence of a prosperous city. The Roman Theatre is also evidence to this.
