I went to observe a 3-5
th
grade classroom for students who struggle with schoolwork. When observing I chose a 4
th
grade girl, we will call her NS. She had a lot of trouble paying attention in math and science. NS would try to find anything to do other than her work or listening. During the math lesson NS pulled out her notebook and book, but never even opened her book, she began to put pencils and other items in certain formations and would move them around. The teacher called on her to answer a question and she did not say anything. After this, the teacher moved her up to the front of the classroom. This behavior showed a lot of avoidance with math. I assume there is some ADD/ADHD there because of the lack of attention there was, but it also demonstrated avoidance because she clearly had no interest in what was being taught. While doing other classwork NS would have wondering eyes if another student or the teacher was moving around the room. NS supposedly had gotten in trouble the day before in car line for talking back when told to be quiet, because of this she lost 5 minutes at recess the next day, which is when I was there. When the students were told to line up and NS was reminded that she has to sit with the teacher for five minutes she

began to get very upset and started to yell at the teacher. NS did not want to sit out of recess at all, but because of her actions her teacher took away another five minutes of recess. NS did this because she was lashing out and wanted to avoid having to sit out of the recess time. She might have done this because she
felt embarrassed by the way the teacher said that she lost five minutes out loud instead of telling her privately. When we got outside NS sat out for her ten minutes and the teacher then told her she could go and play now, but instead of going to play she chose to just stay seated. It seems like she did this because she was again embarrassed of her behavior that ended up making her sit out in the first place. When we got back to the classroom it was time to do spelling and vocabulary. NS seemed to do well in spelling as any time she was called on, she knew the answer. While other kids were called on NS would roll her eyes and blurt out the answer if the other kid got stuck. The first time she did this the teacher told her not to do it, and she did it again after about ten minutes. Her punishment was to come sit by the teacher. I feel that she was doing this because she was bored and advanced in spelling and vocabulary.
