EDUC 323 Discussion Post 1 Week 2 There are 2 main types of assessment categories which are summative and formative. Summative assessments are a less formal version of an assessment and is usually don’t following instruction or during the guided practice section of the lesson. Formative assessments are official tests that identify the development and compression of what students are learning and absorbing. Formative assessments should match the goals and state standards of instruction. There are several different methods to conduct summative and formative assessments. Of all the assessments discussed in chapter 5 of this week’s reading, I honestly expect to use every type of assessment I can in my classroom and with my students. I would need to experience each assessment type and approach to see how it fits and applies to each classroom, student, grade and lesson content. Summative assessments can be through small groups, peer interactions, comprehensive assignments, interviews, observations and student self-assessment. Walle (2018) states, discussing how students can improve when they start to assess and analyze their own work can improve student performance and lead to mastery of the skill. I am grateful to have so many educational tools added to my teacher tool belt to choose from. In chapter 3, we learn that drill and practice are learning activities that build of one another to help develop a new perspective. Practice is the task or experience of a concept, and the drill is the exercise that recreates that experiences or concept. In a classroom, the lesson, instruction and guided activity would be the practice and the drill would a quick comprehension activity to check for understanding and comprehension of the concept taught in practice. In my practicum math class, I see the practice and drill strategy used almost every lesson and it is an effective teaching strategy that I plan to use in my future classroom.
