speech, court transcript, legislation, diary entry, photograph, artifact, map, broadside, circular, political cartoon, artwork, etc.) Provide a brief description of something you notice about the source, as if you were explaining to someone who can’t see it. This is a detailed encounter of what John Lawson not only saw but what he also encountered during his trip through the Carolinas. It details his day-to-day activities as well as his encounters. This is a picture of what appears to be the original legislation from woman during suffrage. It also has the signatures of the lawmakers that signed the end of women’s suffrage. Part 2: Observe its Parts Primary Source 1 Primary Source 2 Who wrote it or created it? Was it one person, or was it a group, like an organization? John Lawson The primary source comes from the records of the U.S. House of Representatives.
When was it made? 1709 1866 What are two things you know about the personal background or beliefs of the person or group who created it? (4- 5 sentences) From John Lawson’s Encounters we can understand what he was doing during this time. We can get a better understanding of what is happing on his day-to- day activities. John is meeting with different Native American’s and even going as employing Santee Jack to help guide him along his way. During his encounter he can see not only how the Native American tribes are surviving but he is also able to see disease come to their people. The House of Representatives as well of the Senate are being met with resistance from the women in the United States. The women are wanting equal rights for themselves and generations to come. Women have finally taken a stand and are standing up for what is right. At the time the law makers of America were all men and did not think that women should have the same rights as men. Was the source meant to be public or private? If public, who do you think was the intended audience? (4-5 sentences) Although this was originally recorded as a journal entry, I do believe that this was meant to be public knowledge. John Lawson was an English explorer and published his observation in a book titled “A Voyage to Carolina”. I think that his intended audience would have been the English that are interested in colonizing in the New World. With his findings he had the intention to inform and attract not only settlers but also investors. The Petition for Universal Suffrage was meant to be public. This petition is for the rights of women to be changed. This was put in place to amend the Constitution. Anything with this magnitude is to be shared with the public. Part 3: Interpret its Meaning: Historical Context Primary Source 1 Primary Source 2 Describe two other things that were happening at the 1. Colonial Expansion During this time European expansion was at its highest. Many different countries were all establishing 1. Thirteenth Amendment During this time the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the US Constitution abolishing slavery. This is
