HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Tulsa Massacre 1921 Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event. Exploring this event has shown me that not all events are taught to us in school, and that we as humans still have a long way to go in how we treat each other. It has shown me how deeply rooted racism is in the USA, and how it still has not changed much. The world around racism has changed, we now have more venues and technology to share this racism. I wish people were more educated in how deep it run, and how we are the ones that can change it. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events. Perspectives that are biases can influence facts, and impact of the event. I feel that the perspectives from the two communities can show that it may have been a more traumatic event for one than the other. The white community can come up stating that a woman was assaulted and that is why this even happened, while the black community can state they went to protect Dick Rowland from being lynched and it was started at that point. The misconceptions from that point and possible misinformation passed on through newspapers and rumors can cause inaccuracies in teaching about the event in the future. (if it gets taught) Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. It feels like they just recently did, and are still in the process. Due to this event now being brought up and talked about recently, there is evidence it happened, and it been shared on social media over and over. I see that it has caught on, and it is now getting its time, its being seen. There are documentaries, and articles, and news channels are interviewing locals and ancestors of the people that were affected. I feel though, had the truth been told back when the event happened, and it was documented appropriately, and taught in schools, maybe racism would have taken this into account, maybe we could have changed the way things were done, from 1921 until now, I want to believe that , but I do know that many other events happened like this, after this massacre, but had it been taught, it could have had a better influence or prevented other racist acts from occurring. I know it’s a longshot, but just maybe. Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. If there was not witnesses when Floyd was killed, in Minnesota that would have had a different outcome, the cops could have gotten away with it. His death would not have attracted the attention that it did due to the cops committing murder, in front of the public, and in front of video. It really produced a lot video evidence, and showed the world what kind of racism is still happening in America. It still is happening here, in many forms, whether with cops, or with jobs, or just out in schools, and sports. The racism is VERY deeply rooted here, and it does not seem to matter what happened in the past, it has not changed this from happening. I think that if the
cops who killed George Floyd had not been punished, it would not have proven the point that racism is still very alive. They have to be held accountable, unlike their counterparts from the past, that never were punished for killing innocent people.
