Report
Prominent leaders in the movement included Theodore Weld, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Elijah P. Lovejoy, and William Lloyd Garrison, among others. Theodore Weld Weld became a lecturer for the American Anti-Slavery Society. As the anti-slavery agent for Ohio, charged with converting Westerners to the idea of slavery as a national sin, Weld became known as the most mobbed man in America. He was most known for the abolitionist movement. A former slave, Sojourner Truth became an outspoken advocate for abolition, temperance, and civil and women's rights in the nineteenth century. Her Civil War work earned her an invitation to meet President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. According to (NPS) Frederick Douglass embraced the women's rights movement, helped people on the Underground Railroad, and supported anti-slavery political parties. Once an ally of William Lloyd Garrison and his followers, Douglass started to work more closely with Gerrit Smith and John Brown. Elijah Lovejoy (1802–1837), who was murdered by a mob outraged by his anti–slavery beliefs, is revered as a martyr for both abolitionism and the First Amendment’s freedom of expression. William Lloyd Garrison Garrison joined the Abolition movement. He became associated with the American Colonization Society, an organization that believed free blacks should emigrate to a territory on the west coast of Africa. At first glance, the society seemed to promote the freedom and happiness of blacks. Black and white children in the South experienced increasing hardships and destruction as the war dragged on and the situation deteriorated. Food and clothing were in low supply, there was widespread sickness, and there was homelessness. Children are treated better today because there is more money and programs in place for children, and there are also more shelters and childcare services. References
