King 2 Writing Assignment Week 7: Conflict Criminology, Marxism, Postmodernism, and Green Criminology The basic concept of conflict criminology is that the unequal distribution of wealth and power in society contribute to the frequency of crime. The elite commit crimes to gain more wealth and maintain their powerful status, while the poor commit crimes to try to alleviate their financial struggles. Marxism Living in America, we operate under a capitalist system, which means that there are different socioeconomic classes. Most of us know these classes to be called upper, middle, and lower class however they can also be referred to as “blue collar worker, working poor, and/or white-collar worker.” Terms like these define where an individual might stand on the society’s socioeconomic ladder. Some classes find it difficult to maintain while others rule the corporate world. This is where Marxism comes into play. Marxism (in simple terms) is a political and economic theory where a society has no classes. As a result, everyone benefits from a common goal, and class struggles are theoretically no longer present. Those who believe in Marxism argue that capitalism itself causes crime. In this system, the ruling class exploits the working class, resulting in escalating wealth for the ruling class and an equally escalating poverty for the working class. Postmodernism Postmodern criminology, a recent new school of thought regarding criminal behavior has emerged. As a result of the postmodern criminology movement, modern theories are criticized for not adequately addressing issues that affect people's self/society divide at the present time.
