7.1 Shifting Power – LEQ Brainstorm and Outline Historical Context: In the 19th century (1800s), the European powers believed that building a modern economy required establishing colonies. They focused on the economic and political benefits of imperialism. By the early 20th century (1900s), as the struggles of workers and the burden of imperialist wars began to take a toll, the costs of imperialism resulted in challenges to the existing political and social order that had dominated the century before. The 20th century was a time of great social and political change, much of which resulted in tension and division around the world. Challenges to existing states and political establishments set the stage for shifting powers throughout the 20th century. Long established states such as the Ottoman Empire dissolved, while new political experiments, such as communism, emerged in Russia, China, and elsewhere. PROMPT: Compare the internal and external factors that contributed to change after 1900 in at least two of the following locations: Russia, China, the Ottoman Empire, Mexico. Directions: Following along with the lecture notes provided, compare and contrast the political changes in the four locations below. For each comparative topic you will discuss and draft a topic sentence to analyze the historical information. Once all three topic sentences have been written, organize an overall thesis statement to address the LEQ Prompt above.
