HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: I chose to explore the creation of Earth Day Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event. I found that I did not know anything about the creation of Earth Day. I did not know that the EPA was created after Earth Day pushed this topic out so far. That Earth Day was created after “teach- ins” were happening at college campuses. I was naive to think, that many things that involve the government, simply start and end in the government. To realize that this was college campus students and others that were coming together to spread a message that made such an impact is wonderful. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events. Being very cautious about my sources, I did not come across too much bias as of yet. I utilized government websites that I know would give factual information. I was preparing to be cautious about articles that may be bias, but the majority of the information that was coming up was from government websites. I am searching for articles to get a personal point of view on the events, but will need to read carefully to ensure that it is not bias opinion. Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. If all of the articles were written by individuals that were at the event, instead of the facts of what was set to transpire at the events, we could have bias opinions that could take away from the factual information of the events. Each person would see things differently, or hear/interpret things differently. Think about how people text all of the time now, without hearing someone read those text messages, you cannot understand the tone they were going for and may misinterpret what they meant, or how they meant it. Reminds me of the telephone game, where by the end of the line, the story was absolutely nothing like it started as. Bias opinions can be so focused on their personal thoughts, that it can alter the perception of what actually transpired. Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. If the articles about the creation of Earth Day were biased, then it could tarnish the reputation and the good that earth day does every year, and the progress that the EPA has been able to do over the last 52 years.
