HIS 100 Project Template(1)HIS 100 Project Template Use this template to address the steps in your Project Guidelines and Rubric. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Ensure that you have considered your instructor’s feedback when revising your work. Proofread the entire document before submitting. Part 1: Creating a Research Question 1. Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic. I believe this disaster in Russia’s history is an interesting cover up, which caused many assumptions towards the Soviets and resulted in many after-effects that followed. 2. Discuss the significance of your historical research question in relation to your current event. The evidence that I have gathered from my primary and second sources has thoroughly explained and confirmed my original research question of, “What caused the Chernobyl accident?” This topic is relevant to modern society and my current event of climate change because this disaster caused serious radiation sickness and contamination to the surrounding area and is still radioactive killing everything in the environment to this day and for the foreseeable future. 3. Explain how you used sources to finalize your research question. Historical perspective and evidence has strengthened and influenced my original research question because I didn’t have much information or knowledge about Chernobyl and the evidence and facts that I have obtained from my sources has definitely answered all of my questions. Part 2: Building Context to Address Questions 1. Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event. The 1986 Chernobyl disaster was the result of a system failure in one of the reactors which were mechanically run by poorly trained employees, thus causing a nuclear explosion. This catastrophic event happened at the Chernobyl power plant, which inevitably could have been prevented if corners had not been cut during the manufacturing, installing, and operating of the plant. I chose this political perspective because the Soviets did not competently, effectively, and transparently inform the public regarding any of their failures which caused chaos between the people of Chernobyl and their government. 4. Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. Viktor Bryukhanov was responsible for the events that occurred at Chernobyl; Bryukhanov helped build and run the plant. Anatoly Dyatlov was the Deputy Chief Engineer of Operations; Dyatlov was responsible for overseeing the long overdue safety tests on reactor NO. 4. Leonid Toptunova was the Senior Reactor Control Engineer overseeing the NO. 4 reactor at the plant at the time of the explosion. Valery Legasov was the First Deputy Director for the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy; Legasov was placed in charge of containing the disaster. Boris Scherbina was the Deputy Chairmen of the Soviet Council of Ministers of the government commissions in Chernobyl. 1
5. Explain the historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event . The Soviet Union was in control of Russia and was protected by the KGB. Not much information was released or shared amongst the two groups. The people of Chernobyl felt the government cared more about a negative image than about the well-being of the people affected by the disaster. Mikhail Gorbachev didn’t respond until 18 days after the catastrophe. He had intentionally brushed off the seriousness of the accident. Part 3: Examining How Bias Impacts Narrative 1. Describe a narrative you identified while researching the history of your historical event. One narrative that has significantly changed the contemporary understanding of the disaster of Chernobyl is the perspective on how the Soviets only cared about how their government looked after this accident took place and did not care about their citizens lives that where taken from the explosion. 6. Articulate how biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what is known or unknown about history. People have influenced what is known about Chernobyl. Everyone thinks differently, leading them to believe what they want based on the information shared with them. When this disaster occurred the Soviets said they didn’t want to scare or panic the people of Chernobyl, so they didn’t tell the public what happened so no one was evacuated or got they medical help they needed causing millions of deaths. This catastrophic event is still exposing the people and animals harming every living thing and are becoming mutants due to the exposure. This explosion contaminated this area with so much radiation people still can’t live near the exclusion zone and won’t be able to for the very foreseeable future. 7. Identify the perspectives that you think are missing from your historical event’s narrative. If the corrects procedures would have taken place and the people in charge of the power plant cared about the safety of the people and the power plant none of this would have happened but the soviets and other communist leaders pushed to get things done and didn’t think about the consequences in order to make the communist happy ultimately caused the catastrophic failures due to not following the correct steps and skipping safety procedures. Part 4: Connecting the Past With the Present 1. Explain how researching its historical roots helped improve your understanding of your current event. When exploring my research topic Chernobyl, it helped me gain a better understanding of the disaster. the environmental damage it caused in the following minutes, hours, and days after the reactors exploded, which still affects the country to this day. I learned how the soviets like to cut corners not only did they failed to conduct important and long overdue safety test to ensure the correct function of the reactor #4 after this catastrophic event they handled it very poorly the Soviets did not competently, effectively, and transparently inform the public regarding any of their failures which caused chaos between the people of Chernobyl and their government. 8. Articulate how questioning your assumptions, beliefs, and values may benefit you as an individual. thinking differently, lead me to believe and choose a different question based on ideas that I already had on Chernobyl. I soon Learned that not everyone had the same beliefs on nuclear energy. This led me to ask questions about the dangers of nuclear energy, the negative effects on 2
the human body, as well as the consequential effects on the environment. 9. Discuss how being a more historically informed citizen may help you understand contemporary issues. I believe citizens should be informed about past historical events to compare and understand current events and have good historical comprehension. This would help societies learn from their past mistakes so that history doesn’t repeat itself. 3
