CJ 406 Module Two Journal 1 CJ 406 Module Two Journal Haley R. Ames Southern New Hampshire University Lieutenant Michael Werner Community policing and building rapport is a societal trend that continues to grow and has been a major focus for law enforcement. Building rapport is when members of the community develop trust, communication, and a positive relationship with law enforcement officers. “Rapport can be described as a harmonious and reciprocal mini relationship between
CJ 406 Module Two Journal 2 individuals or an individual and a group” (Utecht, 2019). Community policing plays a significant role in building rapport with the community, as it is a strategy that police utilize to develop relationships with the community in which they are serving. It can also help improve the accuracy of witnesses and victims. Building rapport is a societal trend that affects the public as members of the criminal justice system are serving the public. “It begins with the goal to establish commonality, to communicate likeness, and to minimize perceptions of dissimilarity” (Utecht, 2019). Society today is very diverse, so the goal for police officers is to find similarities within themselves so they can relate to the community they are serving. Building rapport easily affects both members of law enforcement and the community and is an easy way to show empathy and create solutions to problems that they are directly impacted by.
