1.
What were the causes of the war?
What attempts were made beforehand to prevent war?
War cannot just be caused by one event; it is typically a series of unfortunate events that leads a nation into war.
The War of 1812 kicked off when Great Britain and France were at war with each other in 1803, The
Napoleonic Wars, (Schultz, 2018). The U.S profited from both countries by staying out of it. In 1807, came the
Embargo Act put into place by Jefferson. He hoped for both nations to see that the U.S was neutral in their war.
Then in 1809 it was replaced by the Non-intercourse Act; this act had the same idea for displaying America’s
neutrality in their war. Great Britain impression between 4,000 and 10,000 Americans on to their naval ships for
military use (Schultz, 2018). The final straw for the War of 1812 was the Battles for the West.
2.
Describe the general course of the war (major battles, leader decisions, significant events).
What
was the turning point for victory or defeat?
The U.S lacked the manpower at the time they wanted to attack the Royal Navy, so they targeted Canada
instead. The U.S troops were not welcomed on Canadian soil. In 1812 and in 1813 Canada was invaded,
although America was defeated both times (War of 1812, N.D). in 1813 Americans invaded the West and finally
had a victory (USS Constitution Museum, 2019). The Era of Good Feelings was known during the period of
independent politics (Schultz, 2018, p. 170). Although the Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 it did not
settle the significant issues, (Schultz, 2018, p. 170). By the end of the war “two of our most important national
symbols emerged”, Uncle Sam and Star-Spangled Banner (
“1812: A Nation Emerges”
, ND).
3.
How did the home front respond to this war?
Discuss some of the opportunities and challenges
American society faced during the war.
Women to the place of the men in sports leagues, orchestras and community institutions. Most of the food, 60,
being consumed at the time was being produced in “Victory Gardens”. This war brought respect to Americans
for going up against some of the most powerful military powers (Shultz, 2018). This inturn grew the nations
sense of nationalism.
4.
What were the outcomes of the war?
Explain the significant changes or results that followed the
war.
After the war, the U.S concluded that a stronger national government was need just what the Democratic-
Republicans had previously suggested (Shultz, 2018). Madison then instituted a stronger army and navy for the
nation’s defense (Shultz, 2018). He also wanted to establish transportation for the newly settled West. Another
outcome from the war was the ability to expand to the West. The most important part of the War of 1812 was
the ending. The Treaty of Ghent would be at the end of the war unifying the nation. America experienced the
“Era of Good Feelings” that had been brought forward by the war (Shultz, 2018, p. 170).
5.
How did this war contribute to the creation of an American Identity?
According to USS Constitution Museum, “The War of 1812 may have been a small war, but it left a profound
ad lasting legacy that resonated through history and lasting legacy that resonated through history and continues
to be felt even today.” After the War of 1812, many Americans felt that this land was now their own. It gave
them a sense of unity. This is true for white Americans at least. They focused on manufacturing goods here and
wanted to rely less on imported goods. “American settlement and the fur trade were open to other continents
such as south into Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and west to the Rocky Mountains after the American Indians
were defeated and the British and Spanish uprooted”, (
“1812: A Nation Emerges”
, N.D.).
