Week 2 discussion Hello class, hope all is well in this week 2 discussion. When analyzing the cause and effect of two acts passed by the British Parliament on British North America I think of the American Revolution. This seems to be a significant cause. The Boston Massacre was a tragedy of rising tension, which was caused by colonists into a series of British Parliament acts. The soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War did not fight because they were "patriotic," but they fought for their rights as Englishmen with the understanding that "government was to exist for the benefit of the people" (Maier, 1998, p. 195). The Boston Massacre had a significant impact on relations with American colonies. It was upsetting to the colonists that the British had control of excessive taxation which pushed them to want to fight for independence. When King George III of England ascended to the British throne, his intentions were to replenish the treasury by acts of taxation (Bobernick, 1998). Another leading cause of the American Revolution was the Stamp Act. In this chapter 5 reading, “ The Stamp Act reinforced the sense among some colonists that Parliament was not treating them as equals of their peers across the Atlantic (Openstax,2023). During this time The Stamp Act was passed by the British government to pay off debts and defend new American territories captured from the French during the war. All materials printed for commercial or legal useage was subject to a fee causing colonist to boycott British goods. This also caused strenuous relations with the colonists raising concerns of taxation, the colonists became violent against the British. Examine and explain the significance of the Declaration of Independence to the development of the American Revolution. The American Revolution created multiple wars during this time. wars. Many of the resentments and antagonisms that fed these conflicts predated the Revolution, and the outbreak of war acted as the catalyst they needed to burst forth (Openstax,2023). The middle colonies were divided, and the war progressed. Great Britain continued its armed forces, colonists decided to declare independence. Loyalty to Great Britain came in many forms, from wealthy elites who enjoyed the prewar status quo to escaped enslaved people who desired the freedom that the British offered (OpenStax). The Declaration in this case outlined the reasons for the colonies' desire for independence. This called for an alliance with the French and receive support in the battle against Great Britain to gain their independence. References: Maier, P. (1998). Penguin Group The institution of slavery is not a recent phenomenon. Most civilizations have practiced some form of human bondage and servitude, and African empires were no different (OpenStax,2023). Our history shows how slavery was then in the United States. Indentured Servitude was habitual during the 17 th and 18 th centuries. At this time American colonies grew and developed economically. If it wasn’t for the replacement of Indentured Servitude with slavery, Americans would have not had the opportunity to grow. In this case, there was a continuum of racism which showed a vast amount of social issues among one another. The convention of slavery between Europeans and Africans was quite different. At this time in Africa, slavery was known to those who wanted debt and crime relief. Also in Africa, these certain individuals had the chance to become free like the Europeans. Similar to the European serf system, those seeking protection, or relief from starvation, would become the servants of those who provided relief (Openstax,2023). Europeans did not give a form of relief to be free. The European form of slavery was called chattel slavery, where you were one man's property, and you were either bought or sold. In order to be free, the slaves had to escape, which led to group trades and an increase in slavery at this time. Every colony had enslaved people, from the southern rice plantations in Charles Town, South Carolina, to the northern wharves of Boston (Opentstax,2023). By the 18th century, slavery became permanent and children who were born to enslaved people became enslaved. In the American colonies, there were slaves and indentured servants. In the U. S, European immigrants worked in exchange for the price of passage to America in the 1600’s. The
