Key Concept 1.2 Contact among Europeans, Native Americans, and Africans resulted in the Columbian Exchange and significant social, cultural, and political changes

during the period after 1492.
Explain how the growth of the Spanish empire in North America shaped the development of social and economic structures
Period 1 Discussion Questions
Come to the first class with detailed responses to these questions. The more details you provide, the better you will do in class and on the quiz. You may not use Chat GPT for these questions.
1.
Compare the following precontact societies:
Aztec, Inca, Cahokia, and the ancestors of the Hopi and Zuni. What similarities
and differences defined the development and culture of these indigenous peoples?
2.
How did Indians and Europeans conceive of and practice religion?
3.
The Europeans’ understanding of freedom based on ownership of private property had little meaning to most Indian societies. What values were
far more important than individual autonomy to most Indian communities,
and why?
4.
Evaluate “Gold, God, and Glory” as reasons for the European
conquest of the Americas. Did one factor outweigh another in motivating the
Europeans? 5.
How did Europeans justify the conquest?
6.
The European conquest of the New World enhanced interaction among
cultures on a global scale. Discuss this interaction and how it affected both the Europeans

indigenous populations. 7.
Bartolomé de Las Casas became a voice of freedom for the Indians in Spanish America. Explain what experiences motivated him to speak out. What kind of influence did his actions exert on the Spanish, Indians, and African slaves? In what sense was his understanding of freedom limited by his background and origins?
8.
Compare the Spanish colonies with the French and Dutch colonies. Think about factors such as economies, freedoms, religion, government structure, and intermarriage. How did the French and Dutch learn from Spanish experiences in the Americas?
9.
Discuss the borderlands area of New France. What roles did the French settlers, missionaries, trappers, and various Indian tribes play in the development of the borderlands of New France?
Historical Thinking Skills
As part of APUSH, we will learn to think like historians. In order to do so,
we will learn Historical Thinking concepts throughout the year and apply these concepts to written responses. The first Historical Thinking concept we will explore is called causation. It is described below.
Causation
When we are asked to identify the historical causation of an event, we are, essentially, being asked to identify the events that led up to the historical event under investigation as well as the results of the historical
event under investigation. There can be both long- term and short- term causes and effects. Long- term events are those events that are further away from the historical event under
investigation, and short- term events are those events that are more immediate to the historical event under investigation.
