Essays
Four of these essay questions will appear on the exam. One of these will be designated as a
mandatory
question. Of the remaining three, you will need to answer
two
to complete the essay
portion of the exam.
Your essays should be written in full sentences, clearly address the prompt, and
contain
accurate, relevant, and convincing supporting information,
especially regarding specific
people, groups of people, and places involved. As you may not have the time to discuss all the
case studies and details from this unit that support your arguments, prioritize those that
strongly do so. Each of these essay questions can be effectively answered within the space of
three paragraphs.
1.
How did Andrew Jackson innovatively craft his persona both as a political leader and as a
national hero? What aspects of his personality and policies made him a beloved
president to many in his own time, and why? How did his handling of the Eaton Affair,
the Bank War, and the Indian Removal Act provoke resistance and incite controversy?
2.
Describe the motivations, execution, and consequences of the Indian Removal Act. How
did this act change the eastern United States as well as the frontier? How did indigenous
nations respond to this act? Discuss at least two indigenous nations who were directly
affected following the passing of this legislation, and describe how.
3.
Describe how the concept of Manifest Destiny arose from the specific conditions and
geopolitical concerns of the United States in the 1840s. In particular, address how
Manifest Destiny differed from the earlier concepts of “the Empire of Liberty,” the
Monroe Doctrine, and “National Completeness.”
4.
Compare and contrast American acquisition and settlement in Texas, California, and
Oregon. How did Americans reach these territories? Why did they choose to settle there
even before the United States controlled these lands? What do Texas, California, and
Oregon reveal about American motivations for westward migration, individually and
collectively? As a part of your answer, you should discuss at least three specific people or
immigrant groups who exemplify the phenomena you describe.
5.
Describe three reform movements in the realm of society and/or religion that shaped
American life between 1820 and 1850, as studied in this unit (lecture, textbook, or
both). When and where did each of these reform movements originate? Who were their
leaders, and what were their goals? Were these movements successful and did they
leave legacies in American life? As a part of your answer, you should discuss at least
three specific people or reform groups who exemplify the phenomena you describe.
6.
Describe three crises studied in this unit that disrupted or threatened American life on a
national scale between 1820 and 1850.
What do these reveal about American
vulnerabilities politically, socially, and/or economically? What were the consequences of
these crises? As a part of your answer, you should discuss at least three specific people
or groups who exemplify the phenomena you describe.
