CJ-207 Assignment 2-2 Template: Juvenile Court Jurisdiction Complete the following template by replacing the bracketed text with your responses Why this court jurisdiction exists Juvenile courts exist to handle cases involving young people who are under the age of 18. The court aims to make positive changes with rehabilitation rather than focusing solely on punishment and to help young individuals learn from their mistakes. The goal is to give them a chance to turn their lives around and become responsible members of society. Importance of this court jurisdiction The importance of the juvenile courts is to provide a separate legal system for young individuals. The court acknowledges that young offenders can be influenced by various factors such as family instability, peer pressure, or just lack of guidance overall. Therefore, the focus is on rehabilitation and providing them with opportunities rather than treating them as fully responsible adults. This approach can help young individuals learn from their mistakes and receive appropriate guidance while having a chance to grow into responsible adults. Issues that can arise from this court jurisdiction One issue is the potential for inadequate punishment for serious crimes committed by juveniles. Many critics argue that some juveniles who commit serious crimes may not receive appropriate consequences. Another issue is the possibility of over-criminalizing certain behaviors in juveniles, leading to a higher number of young individuals being involved in the justice system unnecessarily. For instance, the case of Ethan Couch highlights the issue of inadequate punishment for serious offenses. In 2013, 16-year-old Ethan Couch from TX, caused a drunk driving accident that resulted in the deaths of four people and the serious injury of others. Couch was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he collided with a stranded motorist and a group of people who stopped to help. During the trial, his defense argued that he suffered from “Affluenza” a term used to describe a lack of moral development and a sense of responsibility due to privileged upbringing.
Despite the severity of the offense, Couch was sentenced to ten years of probation and to attend a rehabilitation facility rather than receiving a prison sentence for the loss of these lives. This sentence sparked controversy and raised concerns about the adequacy of punishment for serious offenses committed by juveniles. References: (n.d.). Juvenile Court.
