The Compromise of 1850
List 5 quotes that give you a clue to their position on The Compromise of 1850. There are 5 different aspects of the compromise so address them the best you can. (Underline/star the quote that reveals their position the most)
“That as slavery does not exist by law, and is not likely to be introduced into any of the territory acquired by the United States from the republic of Mexico.”
“…it is expedient to prohibit, within the District, the slave trade in slaves brought into it from
States or places beyond the limits of the District, either to be sold therein as merchandise, or to be transported to other markets without the District of Columbia.”
“That more effectual provision ought to be made by law, according to the requirement of the constitution, for the restitution and delivery of persons bound to service or labor in any State, who may escape into any other State or Territory in the Union.”
“That it is inexpedient to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia whilst that institution continues to exist in the State of Maryland, without the consent of that State, without the consent of the people of the District, and without just compensation to the owners of slaves within the District.”
“Congress has no power to promote or obstruct the trade in slaves between the slaveholding States; but that the admission or exclusion of slaves brought from one into another of them, depends exclusively upon their own particular laws.”
What was this person’s/group’s position on slavery? (Provide at least one piece of evidence.)
Henry Clay was very against slavery, and also pro popular sovereignty. This can be seen as his original inspiration was to “to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia”, however he deemed it as “inexpedient”. This
means that it would be unreasonable to abolish slavery in Washington DC, mainly for the reason that Maryland still allowed it. In order to resolve this problem, he decided that it would be “expedient to prohibit, within the 1
District, the slave trade”. In addition, he also believed that slavery was “not likely to be introduced into any of the territory acquired by the United States from the republic of Mexico.”
Summarize the reading using at least 5 sentences.
The Compromise of 1850 sought to resolve many problems that had risen out of the peculiar institution of slavery with fair and just compromises. First, he believed in statehood and popular sovereignty for the state of California. He also believed that although it would be unreasonable to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia, it would be reasonable to abolish the slave trade in it. It also implemented the revision the Fugitive Slave act making it far more rigid. Finally, it also outlines how Congress does not have the power to abolish or restrict the slave trade between slave-holding states, but rather this should be consulted with on a state-by-state basis.

“You may separate slavery from South Carolina, and the state will still remain; but if you subvert freedom there, the state will cease to exist….”
“And this brings me to the great and all-absorbing argument that the Union is in danger of being dissolved, and that it can only be saved by compromise.”
“I feel assured that slavery must give way, and will give way, to the salutary instructions of economy, and to the
ripening influences of humanity; that emancipation is inevitable, and is near; that it may be hastened or hindered”
“No free state claims to extend its legislation into a slave state. None claims that Congress shall usurp power to abolish slavery in the slave states. None claims that any violent, unconstitutional, or unlawful measure shall be embraced”
What was this person’s/group’s position on slavery? (Provide at least one piece of evidence.)
William H Steward appears to strongly oppose slavery, this is proved as he said, “I feel assured that slavery must give way, and will give way, to the salutary instructions of economy, and to the ripening influences of humanity.” This shows that William believes that slavery would eventually come to an end due to both economic factors and moral progress.
Summarize the reading using at least 5 sentences.
The document shows their views of slavery and why they oppose the continuation of slavery. William H Steward supports the Republican Party which is known as he is showing is position on being against slavery. Steward argues that while a compromise is very important for preserving the Union, it should not be achieved at
the cost of freedom, as it is seen as something very essential. He also believes that slavery will eventually become abolished due to economic factors and moral progress meaning that he wants them to peacefully abolish
it rather than have violence occur. The text rejects the idea of extending legislation into slave states or using violent or unconstitutional means to abolish slavery. The text also emphasizes their loyalty to the United States, now wanting people to have a divided loyalty between the Union and individual states.
