Module 7 Short Responses – Question 1 Name three historical lenses that you could apply to gain a fuller picture of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Be sure to respond to this question in no more than one sentence, using proper grammar. The three historical lenses I could use to better study the relationship between Natives and white settlers are cultural, political, and legal. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 2 Revise the thesis statement at the top of this page to reflect a more complex view of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Your revised thesis statement should be longer than one sentence. A vast majority of the conflicts between Natives and white settlers in the early 19th century can be attributable to one overarching cause: disputes over land. There are also many other factors that play a role in this such as animosity of white settlers towards the Natives, whites encroaching on Native lands, as well as other small but continuous disputes which occurred as a result of the Indians refusing to give up their homelands. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three historical lenses that you could use to look at the events described in the video you just saw. The historical lenses I would use are military, cultural, and religious. I would use these as they focus around many battles and refer to their religious affiliations often while also explaining and referring to the differences in culture between the Natives and pilgrims. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 4 Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on what previous event or events? (Name one or two.) Massasoit made his decision based on the increasing threat by the Narragansett people coupled with the drastic losses due to the influx of disease brought in by settlers. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 5
Name one short-term consequence and one long-term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. A short term consequence of their alliance was that Massasoit was forced to stay neutral during the Pequot war which gave the English the upper hand and allowed the death of many Indians. Long term consequences were that the relations began to fray between the Natives and English as more and more settlers came to New England. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 6 How has your understanding of the historical event in your essay changed as a result of your research? Describe one instance of a misconception or a wrong idea you had about your topic that has been corrected after researching and writing about it. As I conducted my research, I began to understand the true depth of which Ruby Bridges understood while she was integrating the elementary school. I initially had inferred that she knew or at least had some idea as to what she was doing, but in every article and interview, she explains how she merely knew she was going to a new school and didn't know why until later. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 7 Name four historical lenses through which you could analyze the events of the Cherokee Removal. Specify one aspect of this event for each lens that you cite. By using the social historical lens, it would allow me to get details about a Cherokee's life and how they interacted with other tribes as well as white settlers. The political lens would give me details on the Indian Removal Act such as what led up to it and the consequences that followed. The military lens would allow me to analyze the forceful Indian Removal by the Army, including why it was necessary and the specifics of how and how long each action took. The fourth lens I would utilize is the economic lens which would give me a detailed picture of the reasons why the white people so desperately wanted the lands from the natives. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 8 Agree or disagree with the following thesis statement: "The Treaty of New Echota was invalid, and the National Party was correct to oppose it." Cite at least three historical facts that support your position. I agree with the thesis statement and feel that the following statements support the thesis: The treaty was considered a fraud by the Cherokee National Council although the U.S. Senate still
