Rebellion Reconsidered ANALYITICAL REPORT HISTORY 209 A 2202 DR. SIMON-PIERRE LACASSE 2020
In the article Rebellion Reconsidered Allan Greer takes an unconventional approach to explain the overlooked uncertainties of the 1837-1838 rebellion and extrapolate on how important the rebellion was to the evolution of Canada. 1 Allan Greer explains that rebellions of upper and lower Canada were connected and that this single anomaly played an important role as a steppingstone to satisfy Canada’s need for political reform. 2 Greer denotes that historians have overlooked key points of the Rebellion and remained in ignorance of the fact until roughly 1960. 3 He notes that many historians often write the rebellion off as a violent act in which a sudden attempt at a coup d’état was attempted. 4 Although, due to extensive empirical research, we have garnered a better understanding of the Rebellion while quashing myths and generalizations, successfully recording factual data. 5 Canadian society at the beginning of 1837 was already riddled with a political crisis; Upper Canada seemed to be at peace but, due to the notoriety surrounding the Tory-dominated Assembly, the need for a reform was already in the making. 6 Lower Canada however was rife with a socioeconomic crisis between the people and politicians due to mistrust and the unintelligible mistakes of the governing board. 7 Greer explains that, “The Rebellion was the necessary anomaly in this providential account of the past…” 8 This statement is a bold take on past views of the rebellion; however, this is to show the importance of and how great of an impact the Rebellion represented. 9 Even though the Rebellion had failed and been condemned as violent acts, the legitimate political aspects had trickled into society sparking change.
