Kendall Fletcher Barry Wolfe HIS-240 7/23/2023 4-2 Analysis Paper #2 During the tumultuous era of World War I, amidst a sea of notable figures, several American leaders emerged as shining examples of unwavering dedication and exemplary leadership in crucial military and political positions. The United States, having entered the war in April 1917 and persevering throughout its duration, boasted remarkable individuals who played pivotal roles in guiding the nation through these challenging times with unwavering confidence. On the political front, President Woodrow Wilson, who had recently been reelected on a campaign of keeping the country out of war, soon called upon congress to declare war and join the fighting (Farmer). Leading American troops and allied forces into the heart of battle was United States Army General John J. Pershing, a revered and highly decorated military leader. His unwavering commitment to the army was evident in his remarkable ascent through the ranks, ultimately attaining the prestigious rank of General of the Armies and becoming the commander of the American Expeditionary Force (History.com Editors). Before America's eventual entry into World War I in 1917, President Wilson staunchly advocated for the country to remain neutral. He addressed Congress, making a persuasive case for America's non-involvement in the conflict, even as he privately supported the allies (Byas).
However, events would soon unfold that changed this stance, triggered by Germany's announcement of unrestricted warfare against all ships, regardless of their neutral status. The Germans proceeded to sink numerous merchant ships, some of which carried American passengers (Office of the Historian). In late March of 1917, four more U.S. merchant ships fell victim to German attacks, and on April 2, President Wilson appeared before Congress to call for a declaration of war against Germany (Wilson). In the backdrop of World War I, General Pershing emerged as a pivotal figure, shouldering the critical responsibility of Commander of the Expeditionary Force, charged with overseeing the planning, provisioning, and training of a massive force of over two million soldiers. Despite facing resistance from some soldiers who disagreed with his strict disciplinary approach, General Pershing remained steadfast in fulfilling his assigned tasks. President Wilson's unwavering trust in him granted Pershing the authority to command the entire army of American soldiers, solidifying his status as one of America's most distinguished generals during the war (History.com Editors). General Pershing's contributions to the American armed forces were marked by innovation and strategic acumen. He introduced the first tank battalion, showcasing his progressive approach to warfare and adapting to modern military technologies. Additionally, his skill in issuing detailed operational orders allowed his combat commanders to comprehend his intentions effectively on the battlefield, leading to better-coordinated actions and improved chances of success (Library of Congress).
Throughout numerous engagements and battles, General Pershing played a crucial role in contributing to the eventual resolution of the war after America's entry into the conflict. His exceptional leadership and strategic prowess had a profound impact on the course and ultimate outcome of the war. General Pershing's legacy as one of America's finest generals during World War I endures as a testament to his unwavering commitment and remarkable contributions to the nation's military achievements (History.com Editors)..
