HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Tulsa Massacre & Ahmaud Arbery
Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event.
While researching my historical event and the current event, I started seeing many similarities between the two events. Delving deeper into my research question, the underlying cause of both events is simply racism. White men still hold a strong grudge and hatred for black people. Even though times have evolved, there was and is still racism passed down from other generations. In the Greenwood District of Tulsa, white men did not believe that black men should be successful and did not belong as business owners, especially successful business owners. In the murder of Mr. Arbery, white men chased him down and killed him simply because they believed he didn’t belong in their white neighborhood. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
Much of the history for the Tulsa Massacre comes from black people who survived the event or from newspapers in surrounding town. Each have their own perspective of the events that occurred that day. While those who witnessed the event have firsthand knowledge from experiencing the events of that day, each witness still has their own perspective. One witness may say the men broke into their home and destroyed the home but never made threats. While the newspaper may have reported that black people were aggressive and started the massacre. The murder of Mr Arbery only has the men that were involved as witnesses, so from their perspective. And each of those men have a different biased perspective in their role of the murder. Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
If the newspaper journalist who wrote the article was able to share their source of information and their voice, and after finding out more information of what occurred that day in the elevator, maybe the event wouldn’t have occurred. The article could have been retracted or updated that Mr Rowland was innocent, and the event was a simple misunderstanding. Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
A missing perspective is the voice of Mr. Arbery. Without his voice, the only other witnesses that day were the three men. If Mr Arbery hadn’t tragically died that day, he could share his fear and anguish that he experienced. He could share how racism is still very present in the modern world amongst every day people.
