Slide 1
The robotics surgery system that our group select to present is called the da Vinci Surgical System.
What is it?
The da Vinci Surgical System is a robotic surgical system designed to facilitate surgery using a minimally invasive approach and is controlled by a surgeon from a console. It is a platform for robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (Azizian, 2019).
Da Vinci Surgical System is often abbreviated as “DVSS”
On the next slide, we will describe the history and development of the technology.
Slide 2 The da Vinci Surgical System is made by an American company called “Intuitive Surgical”. The company was founded in 1995 by Dr. Frederick Moll, Rob Younge, and John Freund. According to the manufacturer, the da Vinci Surgical System is called “da Vinci” in part because of Leonardo da Vinci's “work and study of human anatomy” that eventually led to the design of the first known robot in history
The company received U.S. FDA clearance for the da Vinci System in mid-2000. This first FDA clearance was for applications in general surgery; however, additional indications for thoracoscopic (chest) and radical prostatectomy procedures followed one year later.
We will continue to describe the history and development of the technology on the next slide. Slide 3
Within the next decade following the first FDA clearance, Intuitive Surgical developed and launched a series of products to extend and evolve the da Vinci platform. New clinical indications were added as the
technology was refined and surgeons of several different specialties began to adopt the system. On the following slide we will wrap up the history and development of the Da Vinci Surgical System with some statistical numbers. Slide 4
As of 2019, there are over 4,400 da Vinci Systems installed in more than 60 countries worldwide and approximately 875,000 procedures performed in 2017
Over 5 million procedures have been completed by surgeons using da Vinci Surgical Systems. Five models of the system have been launched globally as of 2019. The five models are illustrated in Figure 1 on the appendix section. Azizian, M., Liu, M., Khalaji, I., & DiMaio, S. (2019). The da Vinci Surgical System. In
