Social Class Term Supporting Case/Law Description of impact on American Schools Race/Ethnicity Brown v. Board of Education “Separate schooling is inherently unequal, and therefore, unconstitutional”
The case, Brown v. Board of Education, signaled the end of legalized racial segregation in American school. The case overruled a previous case, Plessy v. Ferguson, that said, “Separate but equal schooling is constitutional”.
Religion Abington School District v. Schempp Abington School District v. Schempp ruled American public schools could not begin the day with mandatory prayer or bible reading.
Language Bilingual Education Act of 1968 The Bilingual Education Act provides federal grants to schools for the purpose of creating educational programs for students with limited English-speaking abilities. Gender Title IX, Education Amendments, 1972 Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex in schools receiving federal funding. It is not limited to sexual harassment and violence. It can also be discrimination in sports or discrimination based on pregnancy. Disability Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1976 The Education for All Handicapped Children Act guarantees a free and appropriate public education. to each child with a disability. Social Class Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. It provided financial assistance to aid low-income students. It also provided funding to strengthen educational resources.
