Module 1-3 – Topic Proposal Sociopolitical advances during the Punic Wars Liddya Ward HIS-222 SNHU Professor Niswonger May 7, 2023
For my final project, the topic I am proposing to discuss is the Sociopolitical evolution during the Punic wars of the Ancient Roman era. These wars took place during the years 264 BCE and 146 BCE. They were wars between the Romans and the Carthaginians. There were impressive tactics of war on both sides of the Punic wars, and as each war came and went the need to reevaluate their strategies increased. The romans, during the first Punic war were unfamiliar with sea battles and had no navy but quicky built and equipped 330 ships to prepare for the battle in which started because both the romans and Carthaginians wanted control of Sicily. 1 The Romans were keener on land battles, but they made strategical plans to conjoin their ships with the ships of the enemies using hooks to tie them together and give them a similar approach as if they were on land attacking their enemies. This shows examples of changes and improvements being made to their strategies of war that ultimately helped them win the three wars. Looking at both sides I would like to study how each side made advancements in their war strategies. One source I have gathered is an article titled ‘Punic Wars’ 1 that gives an overview of the three Punic wars and how they were strategized. I’ve chosen this secondary source to put together a timeline of changes in war strategies on both sides of the Punic wars and see what impacted the strategical improvements to their battle tactics and dabble in their weaponry as well in the timeline of advancements during these wars. Many sources are pointing to Polybius as a great primary source to research in regard to the Punic wars and the battles between the Carthaginians and Romans. Polybius was a historian born around 200 BCE, which gives the time frame for him to have witnessed firsthand the destruction of the end of the second Punic war and the affects of the third. I will be reviewing more sources linked to Polybius to narrow down the use of those sources. My plan is to go through the timeline of the three Punic wars and focus on war tactics and strategies of both the Romans and Carthaginians, then compare and contrast them to learn why the Carthaginians were not as successful as the Romans during the wars. My hopes is to better understand the 1 Mark, Joshua J.. "Punic Wars." World History Encyclopedia. Last modified April 18, 2018. https://www.worldhistory.org/Punic_Wars/ .
