There are many challenges that the Greek and Roman writers encounter when analyzing historical events. These challenges included lack of knowledge, resources, and accuracy. For Herodotus accuracy was the main challenge for him. The history he is recording is after the events happened and the facts were not written down at the time. The most specific example of this in his book one is in his second passage, In this manner the Persians report that Io came to Egypt, not agreeing therein with the Hellenes, 3 and this they say was the first beginning of wrongs. Then after this, they say, certain Hellenes (but the name of the people they are not able to report) put in to the city of Tyre in Phenicia and carried off the king's daughter Europa;—these would doubtless be Cretans;—and so they were quits for the former injury.

He does not have an accurate report of who was in the city. Thucydides also relied on others for his account of historical events however unlike Herodotus, he used eyewitness accounts of events. For Romans the challenges were more towards biases in their accounts of history. Livy wanted to write a more accurate view of history moving away from the Gods being the center of history. Whether in tracing the history of the Roman people, from the foundation of the city, I shall employ myself to a useful
purpose,[1] I am neither very certain, nor, if I were, dare I say: inasmuch as I observe, that it is both an old and hackneyed practice,[2] later authors always supposing that they will either adduce something more authentic in the facts, or, that they will excel the less polished ancients in their style of writing.

Each historian of that time had their own purpose for writing history. For Herodotus and Thucydides, both historians wrote about war not in order to glorify it but because they perceived it as an essential force in the shaping of Greek destiny.

My purpose for writing history is to connect ideologies. I believe ideologies of past leaders are connected
to other ideologies. For example, in my undergraduate degree I focused on the connection of Hitler’s antisemitic ideology to social darwinism. History is important to me because, it helps use understand human thinking and logic. History tells the story of individuals and societies in their evolutions from the good to the bad. Despite that the facts of history do not change the interpretations of those fact can change from person to person. Historian interpret fact based on their own views and beliefs. This is what
makes history fascinating. One challenge I have experienced in my historical projects is the limitations of sources. There are many papers and scholarly journals on historical events and people but, not many works on connecting different ideologies.
