Systemic Issues
Systemic Issue
How are these systemic issues handled
in the prison you have chosen?
(75–100 words each)
What changes could be made to
lessen the effects of these issues?
(100–150 words)
Violence
With prisons having many different
types of people/inmates coming from
different backgrounds, different
cultures, and being raised in different
environments, there will always be a
chance for gangs/groups to have
issues with other
people/people/groups, and when there
is more than half the prison
population that is made up of violent
offenders. Having overcrowded
facilities and gangs that claim a
specific area in the facility and
retaliate against other inmates will
cause violence among the inmates.
However, this doesn't always result in
inmate-on-inmate violence, in
Massachusetts, inmates filed a
lawsuit, documenting alleged abuse at
the hands of a correctional officer.
These allegations included being
punched, attacked by guard dogs,
tased, and even sexually assaulted by
correctional officers. On the other
side of the spectrum, you have
inmates who attach the COs. In most
facilities they have surveillance and
security systems, so they can keep up
to date on everything transpiring
within the facility.
Having an issue in place to deal
with violence is somewhat of a
start, but having better security
systems, surveillance, and training
classes on how to utilize better
force correctly and how to
communicate clearly to de-escalate
hostile situations. Employing
correctional officers and other staff
to handle violence and find the root
of issues. Reprimanding
correctional officers when they
misuse their authority. Also
reassuring that these facilities are
not over-crowded and that there is
enough space for all.
Prison
Overcrowding
Before the COVID-19 pandemic,
many prisons operated at 100%
capacity or even more than their
facilities were able to hold. With
the pandemic happening, efforts
were made to reduce
overcrowding populations. This
was done to protect and instill
everyone’s safety. But not much
has changed. A lot of tension is
created by overcrowding
populations. It also causes health
hazards. Cells that have 2 inmates
can witness another inmate move
in and make the space smaller.
This can result in all kinds of
problems.
Holding the inmates that need to be
there which are the worst of all the
offenders. The offenders who have
committed crimes can be placed
into reentry programs. Or even
other types of programs such as
early release, or house arrest,
reassuring them they can and will
get the help they need. But this is
for the safety of the community in
mind, punishing them in different
ways other than just placing them
in prison. They need more funding
to facilitate the prisons and expand
as needed.
Funding
Healthcare/Prog
rams
With a lack of funding, you see all
different kinds of programs suffer.
Some of these programs include
rehabilitation, mental healthcare,
education, and healthcare. These
programs assist in supporting inmates
who are not fully funded. Mental
health services only get a third of the
money they need to accomplish the
goals of providing service. Inmates
are not getting the help they need,
when they need it, so when they are
released they can contribute to
society and do better.
Having available funding to assist
in building more facilities to hold
inmates, there are no issues with
overcrowded prisons. If offenders
who commit certain crimes aren't
sent to prison and can get help with
a program or a different facility
instead of being sent to prison, that
would help reduce the number of
inmates in prison assisting with the
issue of overcrowded facilities. If
they have more rehabilitation
programs I feel it will decrease the
number of incarceration rates. But
for this to happen they have to
utilize these programs to get better.
This means making sure every
inmate has their proper needs from
healthcare, and medicine, to
education so they continue to
improve and stay on the right path.
