Research question: What were the key factors that led to the success of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule in the late 19th century? My, beliefs, and values influenced my choice of topic because for starters at the start of the term there was article I read where President Joe Bidden made a statement earlier this week to China stating that "the US is willing to fight China on behalf of the Philippines." Which lead me into this deep dive on the Philippine Revolution. I grew a strong interest Philippine history and their struggle for independence. I believe that understanding the factors that contributed to the success of the revolution is important in recognizing the resilience and determination of the Filipino people I approach studying this topic with an open mind, but also with a sense of and admiration their country's history. The significance of my historical research question in relation to current events in the Philippines is that it helps to shed light on the-standing struggle for independence and the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made. The current events in the Philippines, such as debates over national identity and the ongoing fight against corruption and inequality, can be connected to the historical context of the revolution and desire for self-determination. To finalize my research question, I used combination of primary and secondary sources. Some of the primary sources I used include first-hand accounts from Filipino revolutionaries, letters, and official documents from the time period. Secondary sources I consulted included scholarly articles, books, and historical analyses that provided a broader context interpretation of the events. The primary and secondary sources I used helped to strengthen the focus of my research question by providing evidence and insights into the key factors that contributed to the of the
Philippine Revolution. For example, reading firsthand accounts from revolutionaries helped me their motivations and strategies, while secondary sources provided a larger historical framework to analyze and interpret these accounts. Overall, the sources I used provided a wealth of information that helped to and refine my research question. The context of the Philippine revolution was characterized as a desire for independence and a growing frustration with Spanish colonial rule. The Filipino people had been under Spanish rule for than 300 years and were subjected to oppressive policies and exploitation. The revolution was by a sense of nationalism and a longing for self-determination. The context of the revolution helps to tell the story of a people who were willing to fight for their freedom despite the overwhelming odds against them. This historical event connects to the current event of debates over national identity and the fight against corruption and inequality in the Philippines, as it highlights the long-standing struggle for independence and the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made our ancestors. One historical figure who directly participated in the Philippine revolution wasés Bonifacio. Bonifacio was one of the founding members of the secret society called the Katipunan, which was instrumental in organizing the revolution against Spanish rule He played a crucial role in mobilizing the masses, recruiting, and training members, leading armed uprisings against Spanish forces. Bonifacio's participation in the revolution is highlighted in primary sources such as his letters and his role as the Supremo the leader of the Katipunan. Bonifacio's motivation to participate the Philippine revolution stemmed from his deep sense of nationalism and desire for freedom. He believed in the principle of "fight or die" and was willing to give his life for cause of independence. Bonifacio, coming from a working- class background, also a strong empathy for the oppressed and marginalized of society, and
sought to uplift the masses through the revolution. His motivations were driven by a passion for justice and a craving for better future for the Filipino people. One narrative that I identified while researching the history of the Philippine Revolution is the narrative of heroism and resistance against Spanish colonial rule. This narrative highlights the bravery determination of the Filipino revolutionaries in their fight for independence. It focuses on figures as Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo as key leaders and portrays the revolution as a unified and organized movement. Biased perspectives presented in primary, and sources can influence what is known or unknown about history. For example, primary sources by Filipino revolutionaries may have a biased perspective that portrays the revolution in a more positive light and emphasizes their heroic actions. On the other hand, primary sources written by Spanish authorities may have a biased perspective that downplays the revolution and portrays the revolutionaries’ rebels or criminals. Secondary sources can also be biased based on the author's perspective and interpretation of events. For instance, a historian who is sympathetic towards the revolutionaries may on their heroic actions and downplay any negative aspects. Conversely, a historian who’s with Spanish colonial interests may portray the revolution as a mere rebellion and downplay the revolutionary movement. One perspective that is missing from the narrative of the Philippine Revolution the perspective of the marginalized and oppressed communities who also played a significant role in the. The voices of the indigenous peoples, peasants, and other lower-class individuals who fought alongside the revolutionary leaders are often ignored or silenced. Their stories and motivations are crucial in the impact of the revolution and the diversity of participants. Additionally, the perspectives of are often overlooked in the narrative of the revolution. Women played important roles as fighters, organizers, and leaders, but their
