HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Climate Change and Environmental Issues: Creation of Earth Day Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event. Climate change is an ongoing issue that continues to be addressed. I want to emphasize the climate change movement that began Earth Day. Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day in 1970 to make the issue a national agenda. He was inspired by the student anti-war movement, infused the energy of student anti- war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution (History, 2021). April 22 nd was a weekday falling between Spring Break and Final exams, to maximize the greatest student participation. (History 2021) Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event. In the past, factories were allowed to release harmful smoke and dump toxic waste into nearby streams, which was legal. There were no laws or regulations in place to protect the environment. In 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson made environmental issues a national agenda, leading to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by Congress in December of that year. This new federal agency was tasked with addressing environmental concerns. Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event. Due to the release of large amounts of pollution and toxins in various parts of the world, including the United States, our ecosystem has suffered significant damage, and climate change has become a global issue. Many countries, despite being aware of the damage caused by pollution to our biosphere, continue to contribute to it by contaminating the air and water. However, the United States has implemented laws and regulations to control pollution and mitigate the damaging factors that affect our environment. Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic. Understanding the issue of climate change can be improved by connecting it to current events. This approach provides a different perspective on the topic by highlighting what was done in the past and comparing it to what is being done in the present. Such a comparison helps in understanding how the attempts made in the past to fix climate change have turned into a political debate in the current scenario. Unfortunately, some political parties still consider climate change a hoax and don't feel the need to fund its mitigation.
