French Revolution- Triggered
the global decline of absolute monarchies and replaced
them with republics and liberal democracies.
Spanish American War of 1898- Ended Spain's colonial empire in the Western
Hemisphere and secured the position of the United States as a Pacific Power.

Goliad
Answer here in red: The Battle of Goliad was a Texan victory. The early skirmish in the Texas
Revolution occurred when revolutionaries in Goliad attacked a garrison of Mexican troops nearby. The
Mexican troops fought at first but then surrendered.
b.
The Alamo
Answer here in red: The Battle of the Alamo was fought between the Republic of Texas and Mexico
from February to March 1836. It took place at a fort in San Antonio, Texas call the Alamo. The
Mexicans won the battle, killing all of the Texan soldiers inside the fort.
c.
San Jacinto
Answer here in red: In 1836, Sam Houston and some Texans defeated Santa Anna’s Mexican force at the
Battle of San Jacinto, shouting “Remember the Alamo!” and “Remember Goliad” as they attacked.
Texas ensured the success of American settlers in Texas in their war for independence from Mexico.
d.
Sam Houston
Answer here in red: He is the first president of the Lone Star Republic and one of the first two U.S.
senators to represent Texas after it joined the Union in 1845. He also signed the Texas Declaration of
Independence and led his troops to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto.

1 There was an increase of slaves in the state due to wanting to fight for their freedom in the
Civil War years.

House in April 1865, the news did not reach Texas for weeks to effectively end the American
Civil War.
