The book talks about Black women's lived experiences in the struggle for universal suffrage while also leading and supporting their communities in the fight against racial inequality and oppression. It also offers a window into the expertise and resilience of Black women in building and maintaining relationships, alliances, and coalitions to press for the larger vision of universal suffrage, even when their putative partners choose self-interest over the collective.

Black Bostoners viewed the public schools as inferior and started to wonder why it was that these schools were entirely segregated. Finally the African American parents launched suits against Boston public schools, alleging that they were substantially segregated and did not function efficiently. As a result of the US Supreme Court case, eventually blacks had to be integrated into colleges.

The 1920 Nineteenth Amendment gave women the right to vote in federal and state elections after 70 years of fighting for it. Suffrage was one of America's most impactful movements, which eradicated discrimination and increased women's political participation. The women's suffrage movement included numerous participants and strategies, which assisted the cause, from moderate suffragists who sought modest reforms to militants who adopted more confrontational tactics
