Hello Class and Professor,
The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) and the Native corporation system
have been good for Alaska Natives.
Revised thesis statement: The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) and Native
corporation system had numerous positive effects for the Alaskan Natives. The most
important positive effect that this law offered was it allowed the Alaskan natives to keep
44 million acres of their land. In addition to the 44 million acres, the law also offered a
large settlement of 962.5 million dollars that was split into a direct payout of 462.5
million, and another payout of 500 million that was to be paid over time. The Native
corporations distributed land and set up monetary settlements for the natives. This law
also allowed the Alaskan natives to invest in companies and buy stocks.
One historical event that the ANCSA was contingent upon is the Alaskan Organic Act of
1877. This act allowed the Alaskan Natives to remain living on the land regardless of
who owned the land because it was considered ancestral land. Another event is when the
Atlantic- Richfield company discovered oil in 1968. The oil company needed to build a
pipeline to retrieve the oil, so they would need what was known as a "clear title". Finally,
Alaska became a state in 1959.
