HIS-144 T7: AMERICA AT WAR: VIETNAM
Name: Adrian Rodriguez
•
What were the causes of the war?
What attempts were made beforehand to prevent
war?
The French began fighting the Viet Minh in 1946 in response to their desire for independence from the French,
who had long occupied the country. This conflict is also known as the Indochina War. In response to the North
Vietnamese attack on the U.S.S. Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin in August 1964, the United States entered the
Second Indochina War and began sending troops there. By Spring of 1965 President Johnson sent more soldiers
and this started America's inclusion. One more main justification for our contribution was to forestall the spread
of socialism these were the years that America was essential for the Virus Battle with the Soviet Association,
with Russia attempting to spread its impact you had a nation like Vietnam was comprised of North Vietnam and
South Vietnam the North was all for communism where the South was something else for a majority rule
government like in the US, the North needed to be Joined under one standard/banner the South needed to stay
liberated from socialism and didn't have any desire to join together, this caused more rubbing and this was
additionally one more explanation the U.S set required up to safeguard our inclinations in South East Asia
(Hager, 2017)

Describe the general course of the war (major battles, leader decisions, significant
events).
What was the turning point for victory or defeat?
Although the majority of the conflict began many years prior, this war began in 1954. The fighting between the
north and south armies continued after Ho took control of the north until the north prevailed at the Battle of Dien
Bien Phu in 1954 (Lewis, 2022). After this fight, there was a settlement marked that would part Vietnam, making
Ho responsible for the northern region, and Bao responsible for the southern domain. The Tet Offensive was led
by approximately 70,000 General Vo Nguyen Giap employees on January 31, 1968 (Lewis, 2022). More than 100
cities in South Vietnam were the targets of this series of attacks. When the North began to learn about the South's
plans and attacks, it marked the war's turning point. Despite possessing numerous advanced plans and weapons,
the North still prevailed.
•
How does the home front respond to this war?
Discuss some of the opportunities and
challenges American society faced during the war.
A country was divided by those who believed in the conflict and those who thought we had no business there as a
result of the conflict in Vietnam. Television cameras allowed people to see what was going on in Vietnam up
close and personal every day, which was a major difference between previous wars and Vietnam. There were
demonstrations against the war, and support for the Vietnam War was gradually waning, especially after the TET
offensive began. This led many citizens to wonder why we were in Vietnam and to have a lot of mistrust for the
President about why more troops were sent there to fight.
•
What were the outcomes of the war?
Explain the significant changes or results that
follow the war.
The outcome of the Vietnam War did not benefit either the South Vietnamese or the United States after the
United States began to withdraw, making the South Vietnamese Army vulnerable and rapidly losing ground.
Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, was at last taken over by the North Vietnamese Armed force. When the
North took Saigon, it achieved its goal, and Vietnam became a communist state. Ho Chi Minh City was adopted
as the new name for Saigon. The Vietnam War resulted in thousands of casualties on both sides. Numerous
people were injured, and many of them still suffer from post-war injuries, such as Napalm-related infections or
terrible pressure (Schultz, 2018).
•
How does this war contribute to the creation of an American Identity?
The United States demonstrated that not everyone supports democracy or our way of life. People who don't want
it in the first place cannot be forced to follow your path or accept your will because they only have so much time
to fight. In order to bring an end to the Vietnam War, all sides pressed, particularly our own people. We delighted
in flourishing for a period, yet after the 9/11 assaults, we got back to war since, as in Vietnam, we accepted that
our vote based system would win.
