Gandhi movie guide:
Answer the following with information specific to the movie.
Answers should be approx. 1 paragraph each.
1.
How did Gandhi use media to his advantage?
a.
Gandhi caught the attention of the media when his civil disobedience
campaign began to thrive. Journalists joined in the march to capture the
events in real time. This was what ultimately kept the British from acting
to hastily at the beginning of the movement. They had to wait until a law
had been broken to reduce backlash.
2.
What was the focus of Gandhi’s Salt March and how did it relate to his goal of
home rule?
a.
Gandhi’s focus of the Salt March was to orchestrate and lead a nonviolent
civil disobedience campaign. His intent was to terminate Indian approval
of British rule and to empower the idea of independence. Traction was
gained and more followers joined the movement during the 240-mile trek.
3.
What are some of the nonviolent tactics Gandhi used?
a.
Spiritually empowered, Gandhi believed in nonviolent methods of protest.
He encouraged his people to not buy foreign cloth, quit their government
jobs, boycott imported goods, and disobey through peaceful
noncooperation. He further encourages his followers to wear Khadi, the
informal uniform that represented the movement.
4.
How did Gandhi use Indians who could not quit their jobs in his movements?
a.
He urged his people to wear Indian made clothing and picket shops that
sold imported goods. The picketing eventually led the British to enact
ordinances against it which led to more arrests. However, the result led to
decreased trade profits for the British and the release of Gandhi and other
political leaders!
5.
Evaluate Gandhi as a saint or a shrewd media mogul?
a.
Gandhi was neither a saint nor a shrewd media mogul. Rather, he was
humble man who practiced and taught nonviolent resistance. He was able
to articulate his beliefs to his followers and perpetuate his ideas to the
masses.
6.
How does forcing the oppressor to use violence help the nonviolent movement?
a.
Forcing an oppressor to use violence helps the nonviolent movement by
exposing the true nature of the oppressor. It reveals their disregard for
humanity and their willingness to resort to brutality to maintain control.
The oppressor’s authority becomes discredited, and their moral compass
diminishes.
7.
How long did it take India to gain independence?
a.
India was granted independence in 1947. This came 16 years after
Gandhi’s first negotiations meeting with British rulers.
8.
How does this movie support Alfred Webb’s criticisms of imperialism (See Week
3 Discussion question #4)?
a.
Alfred Webb criticized imperialist ventures due to the colonizers
harvesting resources and leaving the native populations thoroughly
exploited. This move is a direct example of Mr. Webb’s criticism. To
illustrate, the British monopolized the salt of India but imposed a salt tax
on the Indian people.
9.
Do you think that the Gandhian movement was successful? Why or why not?
a.
Yes, I do believe that the Gandhian movement was successful. Albeit slow,
India was able to gain its independence. Furthermore, the foundation for
nonviolent civil disobedience reshaped the idea of political protest for
future activists.
