Melissa Nguyen HIS 200: Applied History Southern New Hampshire University September 12, 2021 Preliminary Writing Plan For my historical event analysis, I have elected to concentrate on the impact of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which led to Native Americans being forcefully removed from their homes and relocated thousands of miles away due to greed and unjust abuse of government power. This historical event is significant for several reasons, including the influential impact on several notable policies and laws over the three decades that followed. As a topic that our country would like erased from history to avoid humiliation and shame for leading the world's longest Holocaust, providing a historical perspective of the “Trail of Tears” while highlighting the impacts on both Cherokee people and American society is essential for preserving history and educating modern society of the atrocities endured by our native brothers and sisters. I wish to offer a way of looking at this historical event and allowing my audience to see the connections and causalities they previously could not see. In analyzing the Cherokee’s opposition to the removal and relocation and the historical context and perspectives of Indian removal supporters, I hope to gain a more informed comprehension of the motivating factors behind establishing the Indian Removal Act and how this policy was advantageous to the Cherokee people. More specifically, I will try to answer the following research question: How did the Indian Removal Act impact the Cherokee people and American society who observed this systemic violence which included genocide?
What significant threat did society face from the Cherokee people that would justify President Andrew Jackson's actions which broke laws and treaties by forcefully removing and relocating Native Americans thousands of miles away? Did they not assimilate enough for the white colonists? Was it simply due to greed and racial prejudice? Search terms that I have used in my research thus far include the following: Cherokee Removal, Trail of Tears, Indian Removal Act, Native American Oppression, and Jacksonianism. My analysis should take into account how this event transpired, both for the Cherokee people and for the nation, in ensuing years. The first secondary source “The Cherokee Removal and the Fourteenth Amendment” is an article in the Duke Law Journal written by Gerard Magliocca in 2003 and published by the Duke University School of Law. I chose this source based on the relevance of the information provided, which explains how the removal of Cherokee Indians by President Jackson has influenced and shaped society. Magliocca (2003) provides a fresh perspective of the historical event by analyzing relevant primary sources, including stories from survivors of the Trail of Tears and leaders who led the march, which resulted in approximately 4,000 Cherokee deaths. Another secondary source chosen for my analysis is “Indian Removal & The Trail of Tears”, by Sara McGill (2017), located in the Shapiro Library. By outlining the conflict between the Cherokee people and the U.S. government, which led to the Indian Removal Act, this article provides necessary supporting information for the previous secondary source article. The information provided in this source will assist my audience in establishing both background information and historical context surrounding this historical event known as the Trail of Tears.
