JEWS OF THE SOVIET UNION 2 3 Factors that Contributed to the Unique Response by American Jews to Jews of the Soviet Union The American Jewish community were confronted with mind boggling emotions and challenges in the Holocaust repercussions. While most felt a feeling of frustration and responsible for not taking additional measures to prevent the tragedy, others were electrified to focus on taking action and supporting kindred Jews. The American Civil Rights Movement was viewed as another critical event that affected the Jewish community in the United States. Most of the Jews played a role in the movement, their experiencing of discrimination and prejudices is what assisted with shaping their activism. In the Six Day War, Israel’s victory was viewed as a snapshot of pride and assisted the Jewish Americans restless about the results of the conflict. Also, the conflict enhanced the Jewish American’s adoration for Israel and pervaded them with confidence with advocating for their interest both at home and abroad (Sales, 2017). These events profoundly affected the Jewish Americans and their challenge with freeing Soviet Jews. Also, Jewish American activists, Israel, and Holocaust memories freshly in their minds, wages relentlessly “let my people go” campaign, which was a success. It involved thousands of Soviet Jews who had emigrated to both Israel and the United States. Conclusion Even though the Jewish community in America faced different challenges and emotions in the Holocaust aftermath, the survivors and their descendants rose to be recognized as one of the largest Holocaust organizations in North America, and recognized for functioning as an umbrella organization for survivor resources that provide services and advocacy. Also, most of the survivors believe that remembrance of the Holocaust is basically part of being Jewish.
