Part I
Read:
“Who should tell the histories? The tribes or the museums?”
Read:
“Where words mean as much as objects.”
Who should tell the history?
What is the significance of the National Museum of the American Indian?
The significance of the National Museum of the American Indian is to preserve and honor
the past, and cultural significance of the group.
Where did the objects from the collection come from? Why is that important?
The objects from the collection came from a variety of reigons but a majority of them were
from Native communities themselves. The importance in this lies that they seek to preserve
their signficant objects as a way of honoring their histories.
Describe the exhibition on Machu Picchu held at the Field Museum in Chicago in 2004. Why
was this exhibition groundbreaking?
The reason why it was groundbreaking was because “its careful exploration of the famed
archeological site high in the Peruvian Andes, but also for demonstrating an almost
devotional care to exhuming a lost past.”
What does Machu Picchu mean for Peruvians?
It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations for Peruvians.
Provide an example of the criticism leveled at the National Museum of American Indian. Were
there problems with how items were displayed? Why?
Some crtics have argued that the museum’s approach to the display of certain objects were
done in ways that seem disrespectful to Native tribes/communities.
Where words mean as much as objects.
What is the disagreement between the Museum of Natural History and the Apache? Why is the
issue important for how we categorize historical objects? What is the difference, for museums,
between “sacred objects” and “objects of cultural patrimony”?
The disagreement is “whether the museum will officially designate the items as sacred
relics that should never have been taken.” which is important for how we categorize
historical objects because they should be categorized in a way that is respectful and truly
speaks to their histories and does not just deem them as anything that can ever be taken.
“the museum’s position is insulting to them and their deities.”
How is language important in light of historical and generational trauma?
Language is one of the most significant things that shed light on historical and generational
traumas because they speak on things that many people might not have known from
outside cultures, and it completely changes and revolutionizes the way we see cultures and
historical and generational traumas.
What is the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act?
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act is a federal law requiring
museums/similar institutions to return Native Am
erican items (sacred and culturally
patrimonial for example), back to the native tribes.
