1-2 Project Topic Exploration
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
●
Globalization– Creation of the UN
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history
or experiences.
●
I know very little about the United Nations.
I only know that a group of countries
joined together and formed allies to help and support each other during
hardships. I believe their system is similar to the United States, where each state
has their own representative, and then there is one who is the president for all of
the nations.
My family is from Greece, and I know that Greece is part of the UN.
It was very important to my grandparents when Greece joined the UN. My
grandpa said that they felt so much more security when they became a part of
the UN. It will be interesting to learn about all of the countries involved, and how
they can help each other.
Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
●
The beliefs and opinions that I have related to the creation of the United Nations
is that we work stronger together.
I believe that when bringing these nations
together so many accomplishments will happen, and have already happened.
There are 195 total countries in the world, and 193 countries joined together in
the UN.
The United Nations were formed to bring a sense of security and peace
to our nations.
But I do not believe that all countries in the UN are allies because
countries such as Armenia,
Azerbaijan, and Turkey are still fighting within each
other.
And that is only one example of countries that do not agree with each
other, but being part of the UN, they still have other responsibilities that they
need to follow and continue with.
So although the United Nations is supposed to
bring peace and security to all the United Nations, it is not 100% possible to do
so.
It is bad to fight within the UN because it might cause other countries to pick
a side, but the point of the UN is to stick together and not have this dividing
factor.
It causes a rift between other countries, but all in all, the United Nations is
a great creation, and the positive outcomes outweigh the negatives that have
come from joining together.
Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
●
One of the goals that the United Nations has set is to limit global warming and to
prevent climate change.
This is very relevant today because in current events
we are experiencing rapid climate change, which is dangerous for our society.
The nations have come together to help stop pollution, and are actively trying to
find new ways to slow down
global warming.
In December of 2015, all 195
countries agreed to “curb emissions and take common climate action” (United
Nations, n.d.).
Research from NASA shows that Earth’s global temperature is
rising every decade.
This is primarily coming from the burning of fossil fuels,
which in turn is raising our carbon footprint (NASA, 2022).
The UN is taking this
very seriously, and is encouraging everyone to lower our carbon footprint by
switching to more earth friendly measures.
One of these changes included a
global transition to renewable energy (United Nations, n.d.).
Another goal of the
UN that is relevant to today's events,
is their global response to COVID-19.
They promised to save lives, protect societies, and recover better (United
Nations, n.d.).
These few examples show why the United Nations is a positive
force for the world.
The nations involved all work together to ensure a more
healthy and hopeful life.
The UN gives opportunities to everyone because of the
safety measures and precautions that they take to keep others safe.
Their motto
is to spread peace and security for everyone.
In this day and
age we are all
trying to survive.
So to have 193 countries work together as a team to ensure
the safety of others is amazing.
The United Nations were formed after World
War II.
The League of Nations was formed in 1920, but couldn’t get many
countries to agree or join.
After World War II, when the United Nations formed
they made a promise to discourage any acts of violence, or aggression.
And that
if acts of aggression are involved, then all countries in the United Nations would
do what they can to stop the aggression (Jebb, 1953).
The reason for formation
was to also prevent such a tragic war from happening again.
