HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration
You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is
a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the
bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and
examples.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
The historical topic I chose to explore is the Tulsa race massacre.
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or
experiences.
I am unfamiliar with the Tulsa race massacre, but I would like to learn about the social and
economic events that led to this historical event. From what I do know, the massacre stemmed
from white people being angered that black people were becoming less poor and more well off.
Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
An incident occurred in an elevator where a black man by the name of Dick Rowland allegedly
assaulted a white woman. Even after the accusations were dismissed, he was receiving threats of
being lynched. Outrage sparked after a group of armed black men were seen outside the court to
protect Dick Rowland which led to a mob of white men destroying black owned businesses,
schools, and personal properties in attempt to ‘teach’ black citizens a lesson by demolishing
anything they were not seen as worthy of owning. I believe that the destruction of the upcoming
black community in Tulsa originated from deep rooted racism and significantly affected the
entire city of Tulsa. Even now with the creation of the Race Riot Commission they are still
fighting for their stories to be heard.
Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
The Tulsa race massacre is still relevant in society today because although racism has declined,
there is still inequality with people of color. The city of Tulsa has suffered long term
consequences after the
Greenwood District was destroyed. Had the Tulsa race massacre never occurred, the housing
market would not have dropped, and the once thriving community would be highly successful.
