Identify the topic you chose to explore:
The Tulsa Massacre
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
The Tulsa Massacre occurred due to concerns revolving around a potential hanging of a young
black male named Dick Rowland who was accused of violence or sexual assault to a young white
female who operated the elevator. The black residents of the small thriving black community,
known as black wall street, had attempted to protect the young man that was accused of these
crimes to try to prevent a lynching, so a white lynching mob then came through destroying the
thriving community, killing roughly 300 people, burning business and homes to the ground. This
riot had started on May 21, 1921, and lasted through until June 1, 1921.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
George Monroe was 6 years old during the Tulsa Massacre riot in May 1941 where 300 people
were known to have died. This Massacre was known as the single worst riot of all time and one
of the most fatal terrorist attacks to date. After this riot the Oklahoma legislature formed a race
riot commission that would hear testimony from all those involved in the massacre. Young
George Monroe was one of the individuals which were heard by this commission.
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
Racial prejudice and racism were the motivation which prompted this historic event ushering the
complete eradication of this entire thriving community.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
When we take the time to examine the segregation laws of that time era, we can gain a better
understanding into the historical context because of the laws of the time. Due to these laws,
there were heightened tensions between races.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of
your topic.
Throughout many eras, disenfranchisement took many various forms for oppressed and
marginalized people. People of color with little income have been displaced from communities
because of developmental activity in densely populated urban eras.
The goal is to build luxury
shopping, high end condos, and other higher end developments that cater to different
demographics and classes as a result the more valuable sections of our population have been
robbed of valuable resources to help enrich the more prosperous groups who already have
benefits embedded in a long established business.
