Dear Mr. Troutt,
I am sure you have heard of the Singapore Airlines Flight 006. In 2000 a 747 was pushed back and began taxiing. The weather conditions were bad due to a
typhoon passing by. Runway 05R was closed for construction; the airport had sent out a report two months prior. In the midst of going over procedures they had forgotten the notice of the runway being down. They were cleared for takeoff on 05L which is parallel to 05R(used more frequently). They read back 05L. Later it crashed into a bulldozer and cement walls.
In order to fix the errors of both parties. If a runway is down, turn off the lights to show it is out of service, send out frequent notices to ensure pilots and crew remember. ATC has all planes on radar to make sure a pilot is not just reading back clearance make sure the aircraft is on the correct runway or taxiway, These are all things we as people may gloss over in everyday tasks. Keeping the cockpit sterile while maneuvering and into 10,000 ft is important. ATC has stayed on top of controlling when and where aircrafts go. In a high risk organization making sure lives are protected should include more checks and balances. Sincerely,
Peters, L. (2022, November 2). The fatal errors that caused the loss of Singapore Airlines flight 006
